So recovery phrase is only good for the same wallet
This means that, If that wallet site shuts down, you lose your bitcoins.
The recovery seed and private keys is what makes bitcoin different to fiat money and banks.
As people in many countries have experienced if the bank they have their savings in goes out of business more often than not they lose all their money. With bitcoin it's different because as long as you have your seed (master private key) you will always be able to recover your bitcoins.
As far as i am aware you should be able to import your 12 word backup seed into most others wallet, most wallets use the same standards BIP39/32/44 nowadays but there are a couple that still that don't.
After a quick search it look like Breadwallet only follows BIP39 and not BIP44, so the word list isn't directly compatible with the BIP44 wallets, you will have to find another wallet that either uses BIP39 or 39/44.
You shouldn't have any problems backing up your Breadwallet seed into the Bitcoin.com wallet, it is a fork of the Copay wallet and that has Mnemonic (BIP39) support for wallet backups.
