I'm new to bitcoin

Tue Aug 23, 2016 4:26 pm

I'm new to bitcoin and trying to set up an account, but I'm not exactly sure how. I've downloaded Electrum but in the installer it's asking for a seed. How do I get that seed? And how to I register to make an account?

Thanks

hello

Electrum is not a bad choice but that wallet is not very newbie friendly.

try out Copay - i guess you will have less problems with that one.

A deterministic wallet is a system of deriving keys from a single starting point known as a seed. The seed allows a user to easily back up and restore a wallet without needing any other information and can in some cases allow the creation of public addresses without the knowledge of the private key.

You could use a wallet provider like Coinbase if you don't want to mess around with seeds just yet but it's not the way bitcoin should be used if you really want to control your own money.

What would you like to use bitcoin for and what got you into it?

If you are being asked to provide a seed, then you probably chose the "restore wallet" option. That is only used when you previously had a wallet and you want to restore it.

In your case, you are creating a brand new wallet. You should choose the "create a new wallet" option, and that will generate a seed for you.

Don't forget to save that seed somewhere safe in case something happens to your wallet.

I guess some people just don't want to download the whole blockchain.
If your just starting out and only want a simple wallet for sending/receiving then core is not needed, electrum, mycelium or blockchain.info would do fine.

there is nothing wrong with it but it is not userfriendly. start with an easy wallet, after that, you can learn more and run a full node.

for large amounts, buy a hardware wallet.

The Core wallet supports a bad network, do not use it.

Better look up on simpler wallets. I suggest use online wallets like coinbase for now since its more newbie friendly.

Wallets like electrum are not really newbie friendly. I highly suggest that you go to a browser wallet. They're just like paypal. One of the famous browser wallets out there is from the blockchain.info.

You should try the multibit-HD wallet, its very easy to use and very newbie-friendly. Loads up like a charm and you can easy personaliza the setting there.

I would suggest not listening to the people who have suggested to use a web wallet. It's generally considered bad practice and just adds another point of failure.

As for electrum, it is not a bad choice. It has the added benefit over Core, that there is no multi-day sync period. A recovery seed should be auto generated for you, it should be saved and then copy-pasted into the next field. Keep it safe as this is the best way to recover funds in the case of drive failure or wallet corruption.

I think for beginner its better to start with a friendly web wallet like coinbase or blockchain, using electrum for starter is going to make you confuse, and you will be easier to do transaction later using web wallet

Coinbase Web Wallet might be helpful for members who still new in bitcoin and start their own journey.
But as the time progress , we can't relay only with online wallet . You can try to use desktop wallet (Bitcoin core , Electrum , Armory ,etc) don't be rush to learn the features , keep you comfort with this wallet and you can familiar with these features soon.
