something very wrong (bitcoinwallet.com)

Fri Jan 06, 2017 6:37 pm

Hi,

I've got a bitcoinwallet.com wallet since yesterday.

Today I bought bitcoin at bitrush.nl and wanted to send it to my bitcoinwallet.com wallet.

The following happens: when I copy/paste my walletnr. the code pasted is different from the one I copy.

Because of this I sent money to this other account, which is a blockchain account!

Am I missing something here or is the money lost? I'm registered at bitcoinwallet and how is it possible when I copy the code a different code is pasted?

I contacted support and am awaiting their reply.

Kind regards.

Have you downloaded any suspicious programs lately? There is malware going around that changes an address copied to a clipboard to one of the malware creator.

Hi DavidWillaert,

If the Bitcoin address that you paste is different from the one you copy then the most likely scenario is that your computer is infected with a virus / malware. There are known pieces of malware that change the Bitcoin address copied to your clipboard to a similar looking address, and when you hit 'paste', you paste the altered address. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible so there is no way to recover the funds once you hit send.

When sending to any Bitcoin address, please always check the first 4 characters, middle 4 characters and last 4 characters of the address to ensure that you are sending to the correct address. This low-tech solution will prevent you from sending your bitcoins to the wrong address even if your machine is infected with malware.

The only advice I can give you now is that I strongly recommend running multiple virus & malware scans with a multitude of virus & malware scanners to clean your system.

Unfortunately in this situation neither bitcoinwallet.com nor bitrush.nl are likely to be able to assist you as it is an individual's responsibility to keep their machine secure and free of malware. :(

I wholeheartedly agree with Fremont's post.

I first learned of what are sometimes referred to as "bitcoin grabbers" about a year and a half ago. You can search youtube for that term to see a number of examples.

Sometimes they are advertised as just what they are - a program that thieves can modify and then put out into the wild again to steal bitcoin.

Sometimes they are advertised as a way to get free bitcoin just by downloading & installing the program... this is when you eventually discover that you've been sending bitcoin to the same thief's address each time that you paste in whatever address.

Removing the bitcoin grabber is probably going to be exceptionally difficult to do.

I'd recommend either of the following remedies:

(1) Never ever again using that specific computer for bitcoin

(2) Get a couple paid versions (not free versions) of a good anti-malware software and see if you can get rid of the bitcoin grabber

I don't know if I entirely agree with you (although I'm sorry if you lost any bitcoin over this).

Someone wrote some code which swaps out copy & paste bitcoin address with their own bitcoin address. Seems like relatively simple code. You could write the same code to swap out anything. Moreover, there might be some positive application in which a similar code would be useful and helpful (I don't have any examples right at the moment).

Moreover, it's objective is only effective if the you don't pay attention to the pasted address before you send the bitcoin transaction.

As with anything valuable that you own in the life you just need to be alert a to protect it.

If you were sending money from an online bank account to another bank account you'd likely check to make sure that the receiving account number is correct before you send the money.
