How have censorship problems affected you in Bitcoin?

Fri Jul 29, 2016 4:40 am

I used to wake up super excited every day to see what new exciting things were happening in the bitcoin space. Now that a free and vigorous debate is no longer allowed on the most popular discussion platforms, I wake up angry at the people involved with Bitcoin who have turned Bitcoin's open and inclusive ethos upside down. I feel deep amounts of frustration towards those like Theymos who openly promote it, and Greg Maxwell who refuses to speak out against it in any way. It makes me feel embarrassed that people like this are so deeply involved with Bitcoin. In short, not because of the slowness of scaling, but because of the censorship policies, Bitcoin has been transformed from the happiest thing in my life to a large amount of stress and frustration every day.

Recently I publicly asked Greg Maxwell what he thought of blatant censorship like this:

Despite having certainly having noticed the post, that was at the very top of /r/BTC he declined to comment in any way.
I think that says a lot about his character.

I'm just fine with being on the losing side of the scaling debate, but not when it is due to minority opinions being erased from the public discussion platforms.
Greg Maxwell, Theymos, and everyone else who refuses to speak out against this sort of policy should be ashamed of themselves, and the rest of us should publicly shame them.

If I were the owner of Reddit, I would ban Theymos and send a message that exploiting a system to steal from a billion dollar open-source industry is not tolerated on any platform.

Post by Greg Maxwell on /r/btc. Seems to be a response to calls for Theymos's removal as mod of /r/Bitcoin.

The difference between Greg Maxwell and Roger Ver is, Maxwell is a fraud, Ver is an honest businessman.

I think anyone who has spent time on both /r/BTC and /r/Bitcoin can see which one allows genuine discussion, and which one is an echo chamber for the status quo. Sure, there is a lot of complaining about /r/Bitcoin on /r/BTC, but that is because of the HUGE problems on /r/Bitcoin with the way the site is being moderated. The moderation logs for /r/BTC are public, while /r/Bitcoin's is not. I think that says a lot about what is going on in each place.

I also think Greg is confused about what we are asking for. Reddit is a private website, and they can run it however they want and appoint whatever moderators to /r/Bitcoin they want. We as the public can yell, scream, shout, and complain about the policies as much as we want. At the end of the day, I hope Reddit will change their moderator policies because of our social pressure, but that is for them to decide.
No one who is complaining about Theymos's suppression of dissenting opinions is is saying that he can't do that with his own property.
/r/Bitcoin belongs to Reddit, so I suggest we continue to pressure Reddit to put a reasonable person in charge of /r/Bitcoin.

I personally can't stand it. Many times my articles are flagged or immediately down voted for no reason. At times it gets me pretty frustrated.
