How can you explain Bitcoin to "normal" people?

Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:58 am

Hi there.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are becoming more popular each day. More and more people start to use it. But I think, there is one big problem, stopping this whole thing from scaling really high.

How can you explain this to "normal" people?
They want to get their money from an ATM and pay with it in shops. Or they want to pay without thinking about security things all the time.

I am working in IT and believe me, most people write their passwords down and put them under their keyboard or such things.
They would be completly overwhelmed with the things you have to take care off with cryptocurrencies.

I think, you would need some company for that. They take care of security things and make it user friendly. But then, the whole idea of a decentralized currency is gone.

Any ideas, how to solve this problem? If not, I think, Bitcoin will never be more than a niche currency.

There probably isn't a clear-cut solution for all, there might always be two different types of users--the security conscious and the ones that aren't. Crypto isn't truly user-friendly. If the average person is going to use them, then there has to be a faster and more liquid way of spending--like credit cards. Some projects such as tenx and monaco seem to have the best chance at potentially bringing in the masses--that is if they ever truly get up and running. As you said the average person would be very overwhelmed with the security measures involved in managing their own funds. That's why as of now these third party crypto index funds are gaining popularity as they are targeting the more passive crypto enthusiast.

The easiest explanation is this: bitcoin is like paper money that can be used to buy goods and services, but in this case, it is not physical like paper money. It can be stored and used either online and physical devices only. Also, bitcoin is not controlled by the government.

This is the best way I could break it down without having to use the words "digital, blockchain, crypto and all that.

Bitcoin is digital currency and is not owned by a central government or a central bank. It can be sent from one person to another person in the world throught internet, even to an unknown person. All the transaction details are stored in internet and there is no physical papers.

Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency launched in 2009. It is not actual money but a digital currency. People invest in it and the value fluctuates according to the capital invested. It is the founder of all digital currencies and nobody knows the exact person who created it.
