Coinkite Reports Malleability Attack & Urges Caution

Sun Oct 04, 2015 10:27 pm

Coinkite, a bitcoin platform that transacts more than 400,000 BTC per month, has reported a bitcoin malleability attack that requires users to be careful about zero confirmation receipts since there are two versions of a transaction (low S high S). Coinkite is requiring one confirmation for deposits before it uses them in a new transaction.

Transactions have been modified and rebroadcast with new transaction numbers, indicating a malleability attack. The attacks have occurred over the last 24 to 48 hours. Almost all transactions on the network have suffered the attacks. Read more

Hasn't this kind of attack been known for ages? Why has it never been fixed? It's not particularly dangerous since no funds are stolen or burned, but still it's an attack that is annoying and causes confusion. I've read a few posts (on reddit) of people being confused because their wallet is shitting itself and showing wrong information due to the two transactions. They think they either lost double the amounts of coins they sent or they received double the amounts of coins from someone else. Also some wallets get no confirmations on the transaction because it tracks the wrong transaction (the modified one got mined instead).

This causes extreme confusion to people that don't know about the attack and will lead to stupid mainstream articles saying "Bitcoin is under attack, hackers create multiple transactions to steal coins!" or something else equally dumb.
