Decentralized Domain Names

Mon Jan 08, 2018 4:09 am

I recently learned about the ability to purchase domain names in the blockchain world, specifically a .coin tld via emercoin.

I bought the name through a service, http://peername.com.

After doing some research and seeing that names could potentially "disappear" if the registrar closed shop, it prompted some questions.

Is it possible to transfer this name to my own wallet so that it doesn't belong to the registrar (peername) and I can manage it?

I am a web developer and do all the normal web stuff but this area is a little new to me, just trying to secure some names for projects I am working on.

I'm not familiar with peername, but this is a fundamental problem with the current TLD system - it's centralized around certain points of authority, and your domain name could become inoperable if these authorities don't agree with you.

If you want something truly decentralized, try something like Namecoin (https://namecoin.org/) that uses an actual blockchain for the entire system.

Thanks, I was able to transfer it to my wallet without issue so now the registrar doesn't have it.

Just need to find out how to / where to submit a DNS update request so I can point it somewhere.
