Cheapest way to run a full node?

Fri Oct 02, 2015 2:58 pm

Does anyone have any tips for some cheap hardware that can be used to run a full node? Preferably something small and quiet that most people can run 24/7.

Obviously Raspberry Pi 2 Model B comes to mind. It has 1 GB RAM and 900 MHz quad-core processor. I have read of some people running it as a full node however the small amount of RAM seems to be causing problems. According to Statoshi the total size of the UTXO set is just over 1 GB right now, and I guess that is what's causing problems. Anyone running a Pi node who got some insight?

A very promising piece of hardware is C.H.I.P. which is a complete computer for only $9! Admittedly it doesn't have amazing specs, but it still got a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and Wi-Fi. If you could triple the amount of RAM I think this would be a perfect set-up for a cheap node! Obviously you still need to buy some storage space for the blockchain, but that is relatively cheap nowadays.

Any other ideas?
