Doubloon is a groundbreaking cryptocurrency research project that has pioneered many new improvements to the Cryptonote protocol not present in any other project. The main highlights of our research efforts include a brand new Egalitarian mining algorithm called Itsuku along with a massive improvement to ring signature based privacy and scaling with our ShortRingCCT or Short Ring Compact Confidential Transactions.

The project is a planned hardfork upgrade of Boolberry scheduled for a Q1 2018 release. When the Doubloon network is launched it will continue in a separate direction from the Boolberry network but you will have both coins BBR and XDB if you hold BBR prior to the event. If the original developer of BBR ever decides to come back to work there, then your BBR will be an added bonus. This concept will work in the same manner as the Bitcoin and Bitcoin cash split.

This is a PRE-ANN to inform the general community about our efforts here and how to participate in the upcoming event. After successful public testing of the mining algorithm we will have a clear picture of when exactly this event will happen. Deadlines in software development can only be achieved with thorough testing. This PRE-ANN is here to inform you of our work here and how to get involved with testing cycles as well as prevent confusion between the upcoming launch of Doubloon and the current Boolberry network.

Boolberry launched in the early part of 2014 as one of the first Cryptonote projects. At the time Boolberry was the leader of innovation in the Cryptonote vertical although it fell behind its counterparts due to a 2 year absence from the project by its lead developer Cryptozoidberg. This sparked motivation within the community to begin an effort towards re-establishing it's position as the market leader.

After seven months of research and development our efforts are being materialzed in a hardfork upgrade to a new and improved codebase. Our efforts in this endeavor sparked some interest from the original developer to return to work on BBR. After some recent talks with the original Boolberry developer, Cryptozoidberg, we made an executive decision to launch as a separate project. However, that decision was overturned due to an overwhelming amount of support from the Boolberry community for our efforts, so we will continue down our original part of a hardfork split. As holders of Boolberry we will continue to support that project during this interim period, although, our main focus will be on Doubloon. The timeline below displays the original path for the project:

Doubloon is built on the latest version of Bytecoin and will essentially be a complete overhaul of the underlying protocol. This also includes a massive refactoring of the core in an effort to improve parallelism spearheaded by Professor Hartmut Kaiser, lead developer of HPX, voting member on the ISO C++ Standards Committee and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University. Our research team is compromised of leading professors from universities around the world and our development team is compromised of veteran PhD and MSc level contributors. Our goal here is to establish a new benchmark for research and development within the cryptocurrency privacy vertical.

When we transition from Boolberry to Doubloon we will be either be implementing a dev output to build a small research, development and marketing fund or utilizing a mining tax to build one. In addition will be providing an optional in-wallet donation address that will go towards the i2pd team for those that would like to contribute to their efforts towards improving the router. At the moment, our team is working is on a private repository while we refine the project until its ready for public testing.

In the near future, we will be releasing a public testnet for the mining algorithm followed by a public testnet for the rest of the codebase. After the code has been thoroughly tested, we'll announce our launch date which is currently planned for Q1 2018. When Doubloon network goes online it will be separate from Boolberry as it will continue down its own path.

https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/1168 We initially brought Professor Fabien Coelho on board to peer review the Cryptonight and Wild Keccak algorithms to see if they could be improved upon which also led us to review other promising algorithms as candidates to replace WK. We discovered the Merkle Tree Proof-Argon2, or MTP-Argon2, algorithm designed by Biryukov et al. of Equihash and Zcash fame. Biryukov and Khovratovich designed the Equihash algorithm in use by Zcash. Their latest design MTP-Argon2, or Mekle Tree Proof, was designed as a successor to Equihash with the primary function of providing an Egalitarian mining solution.

Professor Coelho reviewed this algorithm and redesigned it to be hardened against all known attack vectors along with optimized proof sizes, which is known as Itsuku. The new algorithm has 1/16th proof size of the original MTP-Argon2 design. Our research into designing and peer reviewing this algorithm has been shared with the ZCoin team as part of their bounty program as an attempt to unify and peer review the design. Marc Bevand research has also been crucial in helping improve the design.

One of the primary benefits of Itsuku is that the miners bear the resources burden while verifiers do not. This is a true egalitarian mining algorithm and unlike the current CN mining algorithms, one that has seen a substantial amount of active research and peer review from within the academic community. Initial spec is 2GB but in any case, even with 64GB of RAM there won't be much speedup, since the limiting factor is bandwidth and not space.

Dr. Coehlo is a professor of Computer Science at the prestigious MINES ParisTech, PSL Research University. His research into Merkle Tree Proofs and Proof-of-work algorithms dates back to 2007 before Bitcoin was launched. It goes without saying he is a true pioneer and leader in this field.

Arnaud Larroche and Baptiste Colin are two of Fabien's students at MINES ParisTech. They've written a Python implementation of the algorthm.

As stated earlier, our C++ implementation will be made public in the near future for testing along with a GPU miner contest we’ll be holding to make sure everyone has access to the same competitive mining tools.

A combined effort from leading professors around the world has resulted in the next generation of ring signature based privacy. We have advanced this area of research to pioneer ring signatures of an O(log n) size where N is the number of members in the ring. This improvement reduces the size by orders of magnitude resulting in a 91.8% reduction with 1000 members and 99.984% with 1M members over traditional O(n) signatures deployed in CN based projects. This is a massive improvement for privacy and allows us to scale to millions of members in our rings for the same computation cost as 1000s of members in other CN projects.

Our Compact Confidential Transactions design provides transaction value privacy while reducing proof sizes to 86% over traditional CT design. This research is on going and if further improvements are made we should be able to reach the 90 percentile range with regards to efficiency.

The R&D efforts originally started with reducing ring sizes to logarithmic size. Over the last 7 months this work evolved into adding a CT design to our ring signatures. In an effort to further improve our design we've reduced the CT component to a Compact size.

Calculations with our new ring signature scheme:

ShortRingCT: (74 n + 12)intsize + 16 (n+1) = 2384 n + 400 bytes
ShortRingCCT: (11*n+ 8*l + 3) intsize + 8 = 356 n + 256 l + 8 bytes; l is a constant, n depends on ring size

In addition, our research team have developed a design for multi-signatures which will be included the new project. Once the final CCT revision is completed we will be submitting our paper for publication to the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR.org).

We are currently working on an improvement to the original Stealth Address design deployed by Cryptonote that is resistant to compromise of several (up to m-1) private spending keys. This improvement is purely security based and will not impact privacy in any regard. We are still waiting for final peer review on this design and if cleared will be included in the new codebase and outlined in the upcoming whitepaper.

In an effort to provide transmission privacy, we’ve integrated the i2pd router into the new codebase with advisement from the i2p team. 1776, the developer spearheading this effort has made a massive amount of progress in this area of the project and we will have a i2p design available at launch. He has a ton of experience in this area and has brought that into this project for peace of mind. In the future he will be submitting an improvement proposal to i2p team to increase efficiency.

Doubloon benefits from the improvements made in v2 of the Bytecoin codebase which include depreciation of the payment ID requirement in place of Multi-Aggregate Addresses, RocksDB and various API improvements. Our efforts towards improving the core include include improved parallelism, moving to a DB agnostic scheme so that any DB scheme can be used through API and general overhaul of the code towards best practice standards. We'll also be included user friendly installers for all major operating systems.

In addition, we've ported over the main features pioneered at Boolberry. This includes address aliasing, pruning and the special output flag for guaranteed privacy that originally solved CN's unlinkability flaw.

A project can have the best technology but if it's not user friendly then it will be harder for less technical end users to adopt it. Keeping this in mind our designers have crafted a beautiful GUI wallet that includes features such as an address book, in-wallet explorer and mining. We will also be following up with mobile applications but they may not be ready at launch.

All in all, our efforts here represent one of the biggest overhauls of the protocol since the release of Boolberry and before that the original release of Cryptonote. One could view our new design as gen 3 of the protocol. As stated earlier, we’ll be sharing our ShortRingCCT research in the form a technical white paper as soon as the revisions to the CCT component are finalized along with a condensed overview of the entire system.

Our public testing for Itusku will be announced very soon so stayed tuned to this thread for updates. We invite everyone in the cryptocurrency community to join us on this adventure as we pioneer the future of financial privacy.

During our time working on this project we experienced some rough times as Boolberry was delisted from Poloniex and Bittrex without any explanations. This was a major test of loyalty for our team and we went on nearly 3 months without a listing. Thankfully everyone on the team stuck together with a goal of realizing the vision.

We tried reaching out to both exchanges to see if we could come to a positive resolution. Although efforts towards this goal were stopped cold as Poloniex refused to communicate and Bittrex followed suite and went even further by kicking us out of their Slack channel when we attempted to reach a mutually beneficial resolution. This was covered by cointelegraph in the following article:

https://cointelegraph.com/news/poloniex ... xplanation

All that said, for those that would like to participate in the upcoming event you may mine Boolberry or acquire it through the exchange listings below. As a project we are still recovering from the near death blow delivered by Poloniex and Bittrex. Although we believe our efforts here to advance the technology forward along with our strong research and development team will present an opportunity for other exchange with better common sense and business ethics . Alternatively, you can wait until the network is launched to do the same.
