Energy consumption and climate impact of Bitcoin

Tue Nov 28, 2017 5:37 pm

The energy consumption and the related climate impact and resource use of the Bitcoin network have been discussed in media recently. I would like to get your views on this.

I am involved in a project called CleanCoin, initiated by the Climate Ledger Initiative, and we have calculated the energy consumption and carbon footprint of Bitcoin and Ethereum. We have based our method on the hashrate and energy efficiency of the most used miners. The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the issue and help define the key attributes of a sustainable digital currency. A reason for doing this project is that Blockchain technology offers possibilities in addressing climate change. We wanted to examine the climate impacts the technology itself brings, but also the solutions possible to reduce this impact. We are very keen to reach out and get feedback and ideas from the community before publishing our findings. We are climate experts - not cryptocurrency or blockchain experts - and would be happy to get your views on the subject.
