Existing BTC...

If Bitcoin ends up running different version upgrades or software, what happens to existing BTC. I saw an article stating that under certain conditions, ones existing BTC could become worthless....is this true?? Maybe someone can please clarify.

This reddit post should answer your questions.

The most important step to take if a hard fork looks likely is to get your bitcoin off online wallets. You want to own your private keys yourself, and not have to trust that an exchange or Coinbase will handle the transistion smoothly. I would get a Trezor now and move all your bitcoins to it.
