I was trying today to check my balance on my usb device or just to get to my wallet, but I had to install different wallet, but I need to open the old wallet , because there are some bitcoins. MultiBit HD doesn't actually support storing a wallet on a USB drive because of the problems it causes.
See the section : What about storing wallets directly on USB keys ? in:
https://multibit.org/en/help/hd0.1/backups.html

MultiBit HD always stores its wallet in the user data directory, which would have been on your laptop.
Installing the program on the USB drive would not have made any difference to where the wallet was stored.

You can restore the private keys and transactions in your wallet from your wallet words as described in:
https://multibit.org/en/help/hd0.1/restore-wallet.html
