What tools are available for tracking the balance of a multisig HD wallet?

(with a single-sig HD wallet, a lot of block explorers now support searching xpub keys... how would this work for multisig though?)

AFAIK, not too much right now. If you have the XPUBs and the number of required signatures you can generate the P2SH addresses using Coinb.in and then track the balance of each individual address. Kind of laborious, I know but I'm not aware of any watch-only tool for multisig at the moment.

Coinki.te supports import of several XPUBs (and number of required signatures) in order to create multisig watch-only but I haven't tested. I could be mistaken, but it appears that you must have access to the xprivs as well in order to submit the XPUBs for use.

We are planning an update for our Android Sentinel app (watch-only app for BIP44 accounts) that will allow the tracking of balances for BIP45 multisig wallets. Look for it in Q1 2016.

Incidentally, I'm confused about BIP45... is the purpose constant 45 or 48?

It's 48 in Copay's implementation...

The BIP itself clearly states 45. HD platforms have been the object of a certain amount of implementational interpretation.
