Two disadvantages of Trezor wallet. . any solutions?

Sun Nov 29, 2015 2:15 pm

It seems to me there are two disadvantages of using a Trezor wallet.

1. It seems there is no way to change the fee. If you have been sitting on bitcoin for several years you should be able to send them without having to pay a fee. Other wallets allow you change the fee (either increase or decrease it as desired). There have been reports on reddit about people having to pay 20 cents for transactions when using trezors.

2. It might be a bit hard to explain to airport security. For those of us who are nomads and often traveling with all our belongings it could be awkward if airport or border security ask for the meaning of that electronic device. (I've been in this situation too often to want to carry a trezor around.) Again, on reddit there have been stories of people getting the trezors confiscated for 'carrying bitcoins' across borders.

If I was carrying a trezor across borders and was queried I would just say it is an online banking device and not mention bitcoins. But that might not be a satisfying enough answer.

The first problem is easy to solve with a software/firmware fix. The second problem is harder to fix. Are there any hardware wallet solutions that are as secure as the trezor but a bit less conspicuous? If not, how would one go about making one?

1) You can always use Trezor with Electrum and specify the fee you would like to use per transaction. The online myTrezor.com wallet lets you choose between .0001 and .0005 priority fee.

2) Just put your Trezor in checked baggage if you are concerned.

The Trezor is not that conspicous. To most folks it looks like a USB drive. If you want a bitcoin hardware wallet that looks like a credit card you can buy a Ledger Unplugged instead.

You could always just use a paper wallet low key just numbers printed on paper tucked away or disguised such as a part of a bookmark in a book. Or possibly use a brain wallet for the short travel to and fro until you are settled.

Both awesome ideas! Some kind of stenographic paper wallet is probably the best option.

1. It's a login / digital signature token or
2. use a passphrase http://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-user/ ... pted-seeds
Good ideas. Those would work as long as the fact of having a Trezor wallet is not incriminating in any way.

The main point here is:

You don't have any bitcoins (money) on the TREZOR. The device only carries private keys (sth like passwords to your account).

That is true and is a very good point.

I really like the fact that you can do multiple passphrases at the same time. One with just a few bitcents for when you are forced to give up the passphrase, and another one holding the keys to the real hoard.

Marek Palatinus (of the slush fund and the Trezor Wallet in his AMA talked about his experience using the Trezor across airports -- I thought it good to crosspost Marek's response here, so if anyone reads this forum later they'll see the rest of the story. (And thanks to bitkilo for asking the question!)
I travel often with TREZOR in my pocket and I've never had any question regards it. TREZOR is too small and even metallic version is not detected by scanners. If somebody would ask me, I would probably say it's a flash memory. If somebody insist to explain more, I would say it's as a flash storage of private keys for my digital life.

However I must say that airport security is just a theatre. Many times I took some prohibited gadget on board, like knife, pepper spray or kubotan by accident. Maybe I simply do not look suspicious at first sight :-).
I'm definitely impressed with what I've read about these issues from Marek and Alena. It's also pretty impressive the R&D that goes into their product, and their commitment to keeping it open source. I think I might just buy one for myself in the next couple weeks or months and try to take it traveling with me.

Problems with setting up trezor in electrum under ubuntu

Tue May 03, 2016 6:06 pm

After reading about problems with setting up Trezor bridge in Ubuntu, I installed the latest Electrum 2.6.4 and tried to set up Trezor with it but failed. Every time when I connect Trezor, then in Electrum check Create New Wallet and then Hardware Wallet and on the next screen push next to go to selecting the type of hardware wallet, I receive "list index out range" error and Electrum collapses. Can anybody please help me with this issue? Thank you.
