Libraries that Bitcoin depends on are currently unavailiable for developers on SourceForge!
I'm trying to build bitcoin-hivemind on windows so that people can try out new updates, but the central source that has all of the dependencies for Windows is currently down.
We as a community need to come together and organize all of the libraries that Bitcoin depends on (and there are a few), into one safe and easy to access place. Obviously we need to keep licenses in mind, ensure that whatever solution will maintain the integrity of each individual license. We could do something better than having a huge list of links to sourceforge (which has been having issues and practiced very shady tactics lately, please look into this yourself) . This is how everyone who has to build Bitcoin for windows is doing it right now: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149479.0 they are going through that forum post, downloading all of these libraries and then maybe if they get it working they will start contributing to Bitcoin development. It's even worse when you already have everything working on Debian, and then go to build for windows to let the community try things out and you hit a brick wall of sourceforge.
The process is a lot easier in unix land, and I think we should emulate their approach. I've never had an issue building on unix and that's because of the incredible repositories maintained by for example the Debian project. So I guess what I'm proposing, is that we maintain a Bitcoin Development 'repository' with build instructions, libraries and everything else a dev might need but specifically with the goal of eliminating our central dependence on SourceForge to host the many dependencies of Bitcoin.
If anyone else thinks it is a good idea then let me know and we will start working on it, otherwise I'll post again when I'm done.
