Coinbase will stop paying fees -- good time to move all btc to a trezor.

Wed Mar 15, 2017 9:18 am

Coinbase has announced that starting May 21 they will stop paying miners fees. It's been one of the big draws of using coinbase as a wallet and obviously become unaffordable to them as well.

If you have a trusty trezor and bitcoins on the exchange. . . there are few days to move your coins for free.

This is just another example of how the bitcoin ecosystem is changing in a negative way because bitcoin no longer is a really viable payment network. Hopefully that changes soon.

Thank you for that info.
Because of some problem of Bitcoin fees coinbase take that action.

altough i completely agree with your advice, for the sake of new users that don't hold enough coins to justify a $100 hardware wallet, i would also like to say that there are other (free) options to move your BTC to:

From most secure to least secure:
  • [most secure]Offline wallets (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/How_to_set_u ... ngs_wallet)
  • [most secure]Hardware wallets (Trezor, keepkey, ledger)
  • [really secure]Paper wallets (can be categorized as "most secure" if you created them correctly, but if you mess up, they're just "really secure"
  • [secure]Desktop wallets (core, electrum, multibit HD, knots,...)
  • [less secure]Mobile wallets (primarely because the chance of thefth is bigger with a mobile device)
  • [NOT secure]Online wallets (NOT going to list them, so i cannot give idears to new users)
  • [NOT secure]Exchange wallets (NOT going to list them, so i cannot give idears to new users)
Trezor: the original hardware wallet, for sale => here
Ledger Nano S: keep your bitcoins safe! check it out => here
Check out my personal bitcoin tools website, filled with usefull, anonymous bitcoin tools => here

Ah thank you for the list. Trezor is good but you are right -- it might not be (sadly) in everyone's budget. (Although I can't wait till personal security devices like the trezor are cheap enough for everyone.)

Paper wallets are great for storing money but when you import the private key into Mycelium, blockchain.info or wherever you import it you open yourself to so many vulnerabilities.

As someone who does large buys once a month, it is virtually irrelevant. The people most affected by this are those who do frequent, smaller purchases and withdraw immediately.

Is this mean if we are send or receive bitcoin using coinbase there is no fees? Or just from certain wallet?

There were no fees before. Now there will be fees if it is on-chain.

If the transaction is between two Coinbase users it is off-chain and still free.

Yes, it's a good choice to move your bitcoin to xapo if you want to get paying fees. If I am not wrong
Just reminder that don't store you all btc in the online wallet. it's not enough safe.

It's different xapo with luno. Luno is an exchanges and xapo is the online wallet
But I don't know for sure that Luno is paying miners fee or not.
