Introduce Yourself! Share Your Story!

Sat Feb 11, 2017 8:59 am

Hello Everyone!

Since Bitcoin is relatively still new to everyone, I think it only makes sense to introduce ourselves and say hi to others in the community.

Bitcoin has a way of uniting everyone around the world, and bringing us together in a new and innovative way. So feel free to share who you are, and where you're from, and tell us a bit about what brought you to invest in Bitcoin! Success stories are welcomed, as are the do's and don'ts!

My name is Mark, and I'm from Vancouver Canada and I'm a relatively new Bitcoin investor. I got into Bitcoin, because I had heard about it a few years ago when the price increased and made some people rich. At the time I didn't believe Bitcoin stood a chance in lasting long, so I didn't invest. It was 400USD for 1BTC back then. Oops! So a few years ticked by and I started hearing about it again, and there it was, still standing, and more valuable by more than double! So I bit the bullet and invested at 1008USD and 991 USD.... So far, My investment has not generated much of a return, however, I believe that all I have to do is hold for the future, because BItcoin may have it's ups and downs, but it's trending upward, and I'm confident enough that it'll be worth the wait!

Welcome to the Bitcoin.com forum! I look forward to sharing with you!

Good idea for a thread.

I first head about bitcoin in early to mid 2013 but didn't get involved until late 2013 or early 2014, not long after i got started the MtGox exchange went down and it was a good lesson to get early on about the importance of properly securing your coins before i actually had acquired any.
After the hack of MtGox i joined the bitcoin forums and watched heaps of youtube videos so i would know what to do once i got my first coins.

Like a lot of people who first get into bitcoin i hit the faucets to try get a little coin for some "test" transactions, once i had enough built up from a few different faucets i sent my first transaction and lost just about all of it to tx fees, it was at this time that i learnt about "dust coins" and never went back to another faucet.
The only way to get some btc was to buy some so I made my first purchase of $50 worth of bitcoins around May 2014 from a Lamassu brand bitcoin vending machine, the price per coin at that time was at about $600 aud i think. After holding on to those coins and watching the value drop to about $20 worth i was starting to think twice about buying anymore for a little while but never once do i remember thinking it was going to collapse, it didn't matter anyway because by that time i was hooked.

It was not that long ago, only a few years ago now but the community was a lot smaller and the scammer hadn't yet taken hold, there was still trust within the community and everybody i reached out to always did all they could to help me when needed.
It's really a shame what the scammers have done to the bitcoin community but in a way they have given many people a wake up call to how this new currency needs to be handled. You must remember that when you start using bitcoins you are taking full control of your finances back but with that freedom of control comes greater risks than most people are used to.

Fast forward a few years and although i still have a lot to learn myself i am also helping others get started and that is a great feeling.
Acting as a moderator on this forum i would say has so far been the highlight of my journey with bitcoin as it has allowed me to connect with so many new people. The Bitcoin.com team is a fantastic group of people to work with and they are always happy to help me work through any problems that may arise here.

So that's about it so far, i have probably left out a bunch of stuff i can't think of now but i got a good feeling I'm not going anywhere for a long time so if you want to know anything more just ask.

Thanks for sharing bitkilo. I agree with you, the scammers are everywhere. When I was first getting started I was bombarded with every site I went to. Especially with hyip sites offering too good to be true deals. It almost scared me away from investing writing bitcoin off as a scam itself. Until my reasearching told me that the technology is pure, it's the people using it that are dirty.

Very nice thread you have here.

I knew about Bitcoin early 2013, when some friend introduced me to it. Being the lazy person I am, I didn't actually try to accumulate anything. Back then I thought it was just another thing on the internet.

I actually started accumulating coins after the Gox crash, and I did some jobs for a friend and he gave me some Bitcoin. So far, I am still holding the bitcoin, which has now almost quadrupled in price from the ~$250 it was originally.

Now I do freelance jobs online, write articles for multiple websites and procrastinate my schoolwork.

All depends on your perspective. I don't have much Bitcoin, maybe you'll pick up more and assume profits much larger than mine.

What I really regret is not having the time and effort to really integrate into the community. I am currently working on multiple web services and applications with my friends (One of which is a chrome extension, much like Momentum, but we aim for it to look better, perform faster, and be modular (Things like weather recommendations, news feeds, Bitcoin prices, stock exchange tracking, etc)

Cool thread by the way. I started tinkering with bitcoin in 2013...spring ? I dont remember, but the price was a lot lower than 100$. I remember some pumps, bitcoin would go up, then crash pretty often. My coworker had maybe 20btc, and I remember telling him to sell it after bitcoin tripled or something. He didnt. Good for him. I never bought bitcoin back then, although I did have a little money. I mined with GPU's (altcoins) on a small scale, mostly because I needed the heat in the house, and my garage was really cold. We have harsh winters here. At some point GPU mining got less profitable...and ASICS came out, I had a couple block eruptors, then I bought an S1, then 2x S3, 1x S5, one S7. I always re-invested the bitcoin, but I did spend it on crap too, like t-shirts. Still have my dogecoin mug lol. We fast forward a few years, and I decided that just heating the garage wasnt good enough, and started building stuff and playing around more with hardware. I now have 26 GPU's in the house all through re-invested profits, and they are paid off. Before adding more, I would like to accumulate some btc for my retirement. Hopefully. Im not a big hodler by any means. I now have a website, cryptominingtalk.com , where I try to encourage new people to start mining on a small scale. I came here because of the 4btc contest :) I submitted two threads if you want to check them out and vote that would be cool. I believe the bitcoin price can be irrational. Very irrational. The ultimate pump, which IMO is coming at some point before we retire, will be remembered in history books along side the tulip mania. 1000$ will be at the very bottom of that chart :)
