Did I loose my bitcoin cash by using Bitcoin.com Wallet?

Sat Sep 09, 2017 8:17 pm

So, I moved my bitcoin to the Bitcoin.com wallet a few days before the fork, at the end of July, thinking that having my bitcoin in a wallet will ensure that I'll get my Bitcoin Cash out of it. Did I mess up? Can I get my Bitcoin Cash out of that wallet? I have only used that wallet to transfer the original bitcoin in it.

Hello,

As long as your BTC was in the Bitcoin.com wallet before the fork and you have not yet moved the BTC coins yet you will still be able to claim your Bitcoin cash.

First of make sure that you have the back up seed for your Bitcoin.com wallet written down so if anything happens you will always be able to recover your funds.
Next upgrade your Bitcoin.com wallet to the new version that supports Bitcoin Cash, Roger has made a helpful tutorial here: bitcoin-discussion/bitcoin-cash-wallet- ... 51970.html

Once you have you Bitcoin Cash wallet set up just restore your old wallet seed, make sure you click on "bitcoin cash" to restore both wallets from the same see and you should be able to see you Bitcoin Cash balance.

Thanks for the help. I think I messed things up when I deleted a new wallet that I created (because I thought it was not working properly, and showed no coin) . Now when I try to create a new wallet and import my file and password, I get the message: " Error: Wallet already in Copay". I do have my Bitcoin, it's just my Bitcoin Cash, that I don't have. Luckily, it's not a significant amount of money.

Yes, I did the exact same thing. I didn't wait long enough for the Bitcoin.com wallet to find my BCC before deleting the wallet and trying again. Then it wouldn't let me create a new wallet with the same private key. Someone I saw on Reddit said it took their Bitcoin.com wallet app over 10 hours for the BCC to finally appear!

What I did then was use the BTC.com wallet tool to find the BCC. Just use the 12 word seed you wrote down from the Bitcoin.com app and it will find your BCC just fine.

Coins can't move without your private key. As long as you have the private key (your 12 word seed phrase can generate it for you) you have not lost your coins.

The Bitcoin.com wallet is not letting you create a new wallet with a duplicate private key, but you can use any other service that supports BCC/BCH to get them. I used BTC.com.

The term "wallet" is a little bit of a misnomer IMHO. Calling it a "wallet" implies that if you throw it away, like a wallet IRL, you will have lost everything in it. Really, a Bitcoin "wallet" is more like a key to a safety deposit box. You can destroy the physical key, but everything still exists in your deposit box. If you have a diagram (AKA: 12 word seed phrase) of your physical key, you can get a new one made!
