How how is a big payment for you? I have made fairly large bitcoin payments. I exercise the same precaution as I do with all my BTC payments. I make sure the address is correct and I am paying the amount I intend to pay.

With the high fees that have been prevalent lately, big payments actually have an advantage - the fees are a relatively small percentage of the payment.

Having said that, of course there's risk with the payment being irreversible just like any transaction. If it's an especially large payment you may wish to use a multisig transaction that allows you to distribute the trust rather than leaving it with one individual.
