Help Creating a Paper Wallet

Wed Nov 18, 2015 1:26 am

Hi everyone, hope ya'll are doing well.

I'd like to apologize in advance for asking such a nooby question. It's just that I don't know who to trust on the web, and thought I'd come ask the cognoscentes that frequent these boards - whom I take to have more credibility.

The question is: How can I create a paper wallet?

I bought my bitcoins with coinbase, and haven't found any tutorials on how to create a paper wallet using their platform.

Can anyone please give a fellow libertarian a helping hand? I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Why do you want a paper wallet? Coinbase offers a service they call the Vault which is safe enough for a few bitcoin. I have seen too many posts from new users who make mistakes with paper wallets. If you want to experiment use small fractions of a bitcoin until you learn. If you are serious about storing your bitcoin securely while still able to spend them conveniently buy yourself a Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet.

The question is: How can I create a paper wallet?!
Here is what I do. I have a couple computers (ooooold ones) that are completely offline and not having any access to the interent. I run Linux Operating systems on these computers (Ubuntu and TAILS (via USB)) and on the Ubuntu computer I have https://www.bitaddress.org saved to the desktop (I grabbed a copy during installation of Ubuntu). There are other wallets you could use (like https://rushwallet.com)... use whichever you like... the key is to have the computer completely offline forever!!

Now both computers can print on a $29 printer I bought at Staples... It has no wifi capacity and it came with free ink!! I print (multiple copies) my cold storage wallets and then laminate them. I store copies of my paper wallets in several unique places... none of which is a safe. I never hide my wallets anywhere that is appealing to thieves.

Now that being said, here are some great videos about paper wallets.

One of my favorite Bitcoiners James D'Angelo from MIT has a great intro.

Have a look at this fine usb paper wallet generator: https://mycelium.com/entropy

You plug it directly into your printer, no PC involved. Unfortunately it's sold out right now but I've see a used one is sold here by a trusted member.

Yep that was probably myself selling one in this thread:
items-for-sale/mycelium-entropy-t394.html

They are the easiest way to create a paper wallet and you can always upgrade the firmware yourself if any changes come out or you don't trust buying a used one.

All you have to do is unplug the internet cable to you printer, insert the USB entropy devise and hit print, turn off the printer reinsert the internet cable and thats it you now have a paper wallet were the private keys has never been online. Couldn't be easier.

I only have 1 left and use it quite a bit, they are very hard to come by now because i think that there were less than 1000 made in total.

If i was to part with it then it would have to be a good offer.
I have always wanted a nice physical bitcoin so would be up for a trade if you have 1 you willing to swap.
PM me if you would like to talk price.

Regards: bitkilo.

Before creating a paper wallet, I would suggest that you review the above linked thread authored by Blazr, who is very reputable on bitcointalk

the tl;dr of that thread is that as a general rule, paper wallets are going to have additional attack vectors then an encrypted wallet on a cold storage computer.
Have fun, send me a tip 136djiDtVHKq8KLnJQnCRJL2TydpGgnyyT

This is a great site for paper wallets. You do not have to use the stickers he sells, but they are quite a classy touch for your paper wallets.

Great instructions and explanations as well!

Another good site that I use for paper wallets (although I store them in a truecrypt encrypted folder in multiple locations).

https://www.bitaddress.org/

Save it and run it offline for the most security.

I have tutorials on my website for creating and using paper wallets. Give them a look, perhaps.
