Buying on Coinbase

With August 1 almost upon us, is it ok to buy bitcoins from Coinbase? The reason I ask is that they have a 10 day transaction turnaround and want to be sure with the potential split that my $ won't get lost in the shuffle. Plan on transferring it to a non-custodial wallet once it arrives. Ok idea or is there a better way to buy BTC before Aug. 1? New at this so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

At this point, I would hold off on buying any BTC at Coinbase until after the fork.

If you have a weekly limit on how much you can buy at Coinbase and want to make sure you can use it up, buy ETH or LTC instead, then shapeshift.io it to BTC or BCH later when things settle down.

I wouldn't use shapeshift.io to exchange LTC/ETH to BTC or BHC. Coinbase does not support the fork. You will be able to put in a buy request to CoinBase for BTC today. If you need alt-coins instead, then go for it. But if you're using ETH/LTC to exchange into BTC, then us GDAX which is coinbase's exchange. Must more secure.

I'm a newbie at this and bought Bitcoin on Coinbase. Since Coinbase does not support BTCC, if I transfer my BTC to another exchange will I still receive my BTCC based on the date of purchase or have I just lost the BTCC since I purchased on coinbase? Thanks in advance.

If your Bitcoin was sitting in your Coinbase account at the time of the fork, I'm afraid you've lost your Bitcoin Cash. Transferring the Bitcoin to another wallet or exchange won't help. The Bitcoin Cash split off at the time of the fork and is no longer attached to your Bitcoin.

It looks like there might be a class action lawsuit in the works though, so there is a slim chance you will get some of the Bitcoin Cash that is rightfully yours.
