What happens when bitcoin implements lightning network or ethereum implements raiden? How will any coin surpass the rest when bitcoin or ethereum can just implement new code and steal all of the best attributes of other coins?

LTC is already months ahead, the gap will only continue to grow. LTC will remain agile and innovate.
BTC isn't going to all of a sudden become agile and start upgrading like mad. It's going to continue to be a political clusterfuck where every upgrade is roadblocked and delayed needlessly.

Way I understand it is that the Lightning Network can be built on top of bitcoin once segwit is activated and people say that would kill LTC. Bc if you can do instant tx's on bitcoin why use LTC? Only thing that would save litecoin would be if there's mass adoption of crypto bc then bitcoin even with LN wouldn't be able to handle entire world population.
Why not just build LN on top of litecoin and call it a day? Why let bitcoin come in and take a proven concept of work for free?
