Ultimately there is no way to retrieve without a pass code or other retrieval system.However,most modern wallets,have wallet and key backups ,which you can restore if lost.

It would depend on what device you are installing the wallet on, mobile phone or pc.
It also depends on what you want to be able to do, some are basic online wallets like coinbase that don't allow users to control their private keys so not safe to store funds there but can be useful if also wanting to be able to purchase coins through your wallet rather than having to set up a account at an bitcoin exchange too.

For a mobile phone wallet I would recommend Mycelium.
For PC you could try electrum or Multibit.
If you want to run a full node client then core is probably the most popular but other options such as bitcoin unlimited are also available. You must remember that if running a full client such as the above then it will have to download the entire blockchain and sync with the network before you can use it, this may take some time with the blockchain size now at 115.76 gb when I just checked and growing daily.

There's nearly no way to retrieve them. Think of bitcoins as cash. If you lose a pocket full of cash on your commute home from work, it's probably gone, right?

The "nearly" comment is that if you have access to an online wallet or your cold storage wallet and you've forgotten a password there are people and applications that can try to crack your password for you.

If you lose the private keys for your wallet your bitcoin is definitely lost for good. You need your private keys to have full, irrefutable control over your bitcoin. Similar to using a fiat bank, if your fiat savings isn't in your hand you don't actually have full control over it.

If you kept the private key, you can import your coins into your wallet. Otherwise, you've lost the coins for good. How to import your address/private keys into your wallet differs from client to client

Yip, you loose your private key(s) and the money is literally lost forever.

Most apps allow you to save a 12 word "phrase" which is used to recover your keys. Loose this and the Bitcoin is also gone...

This is true. But OP hasn't specified how he/she lost his/her bitcoins. Might probably be a lost wallet on an old/formatted device.

I would suggest buying a Trezor or keepkey to store your bitcoins. It is well worth the investment to know your coins won't vanish as they are well protected.

There are xapo, wirex, coinsbank, they are online wallets with mobile apps and debit cards. And there are some upcoming wallets as paycent (mobile) and bonpay (online with debit card).

Ohh! Interesting question: it depend's on what device you are installing the wallet on, mobile phone etc.. I believe Bitcoin will hit 3.000 EUR and beyond this end of the year after another blip crash to come in August. ETH will hit 1.600 EUR and beyond. Both are growing in market infrastructures and usability so are DASH and MONERO.
