When you find a private key with funds on it do you give those bitcoins back to the owner?

Who cares? If they find mine, feel free to take it. You will likely burn out the energy of the sun trying to do so.

There's a reason people distribute their Bitcoin into smaller denominations and spread them out across multiple addresses.

The thing is, these guys have already hit a couple of loaded addresses already. The odds of getting YOUR Bitcoin is extremely low, but with tens of thousands of change addresses being made every day, who knows?

Where is there proof that they have found collisions. To my knowledge, a sha256 collision has never been recorded.

I thought I read somewhere on their bitcointalk thread that they managed to get a matching address. Maybe I'm confused. Could IP clarify.

(WTF? I click "preview", then a captcha appears, then my text is GONE?? What shitty sorcery is this? :) )

Anyway - so the short form:

We found 51 addresses of the puzzle transaction, #51 last night, loaded with 0.051 BTC.
Of course these are known to have low entropy, so they "do not count".

We also found 3 other loaded addresses so far, for which we (and no one else so far) simply do not know if low entropy or collision.

If you don't mind me asking, how?
