How to make a account on Bitcoin

Thu Jan 26, 2017 5:20 pm

Hi there

I just want to ask, how to make a account on Bitcoin or how to register on Bitcoin? Before to choose a wallet. Or no need to do that? Just make a Bitcoin wallet? Thanks a lot!

Cheers
Eric

Pick a wallet and go for it, Bitcoin is decentralised so there's no kind of central authority to register with or anything like that.
I'd suggest taking some time to understand the risks and vulnerabilities before converting any significant amount though, all the cotton wool of legacy financial systems is stripped away and that takes some getting used to, there's a surprising amount of it and bitcoin leaves you entirely responsible for your own funds.

I guess you've already found the wallets but there's a list of some of them here just in case:

To be honest I wouldn't know :) The core wallet is extremely heavy on computing resources, it's the full Bitcoin client and running it is a benefit to the network but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a regular user, it's better suited to dedicated servers and users that absolutely need a full copy of the blockchain. Electrum has been around for a long time and has a good reputation, that's the one I'd go for personally but mostly that's because I'm unfamiliar with the others. I use Bitcoin Wallet on the phone sometimes too, it's probably a bit lacking in features compared to some other mobile wallets but it's always given me good service and I've no doubts whatsoever about the developer.

I'd suggest being very wary of any wallets not listed on that page, at least for the time being. There have been an awful lot of wallets released with the intention of stealing users funds, not nice. And backups, the importance of backups cannot be stressed enough and if large amounts of funds are to be secured then a hardware wallet such as a Trezor or Ledger would be a good investment. Paper wallets can do the same job with absolute security but they're more an "advanced user" kind of thing, not so hard but a hardware wallet does a very good job with much less effort.

Good luck with it and welcome to Bitcoin :)

I would highly suggest the Electrum Bitcoin wallet for new users. It has a simple interface and does not require a long sync of the blockchain.

I'll probably get flamed for this but XP is too vulnerable to run a Bitcoin wallet securely imho. Maybe get an Ubuntu live CD and try it out, see if you can live with it just for making bitcoin transaction and if it seems bearable install something even more secure such as Tails. Security really can't be emphasised enough, ideally you'd have an old computer running something really secure that you only connect to the internet when you want to make a transaction and even then it can be nerve wracking, if the market goes mad again you could have a file on your computer worth 1000x the price of the computer its running on and that's a very attractive target.

EDIT: Just checked and Tails includes Electrum now so you'd only need install Tails to USB key. Details here:

Hello-Well, at this point, I have a user name and a password. I guess that I'll start using the Electrum Bitcoin Wallet because I'm a beginner. All's I want to do is to make a purchase at a website for $87.00. Can someone please give to me SIMPLE, STEP-BY-STEP instructions as to how I can do this? I don't know anything about this site and it's terminology and it's tools. Again, please be so kind as to give to me simple step-by-step instructions as to how to set up this wallet with $87.00 in it. And, once I have this wallet, how do I immediately make a purchase at a particular website with this $87.00? Hope to hear from you. My email address is flowering20.9332@yahoo.com. Thanks very much. You need to make an $87 purchase using bitcoin? I'm guessing you don't have bitcoin yet and need to get some and how you do that depends on the payment method you want to use. If you're in the US then Coinbase might be a good place to start, they have various payment methods including credit card and if you're not planning on saving in bitcoin then a coinbase bitcoin wallet should be all you need.

Hello Jim,

Although the bitcoin wallet you have chosen to use (Electrum) is a great and secure wallet it is not part of a bitcoin exchange.
To get the $87 in bitcoins you need for the purchase then you will first have to purchase the bitcoins, this can be done a variety of ways.
1. https://www.bitcoin.com/buy-bitcoin - You can choose an exchange here.
2. https://localbitcoins.com/ - A service that connects buyers to sellers, you can purchase bitcoin direct in person with cash too if you prefer the personal touch.
3. A wallet like Mycelium has a feature that allows sellers and buyers in the same areas to connect, they also have a link with Glidera now but i have not looked at that part myself.
Please help Ross and his family during this hard time by donating to the https://freeross.org/ fund. Play at the best provably fair Bitcoin games site here: games.bitcoin.com Need a fantastic Bitcoin wallet Pick up some great Bitcoin.com swag here
