How did YOU get into Bitcoin?

Thu Oct 29, 2015 5:42 am

This topic is designed to have forum users share their experiences on what got them into Bitcoin and its community. Feel free to share what got you intrigued, which people you talked to, and your experiences with the community itself!

Personally, I remember about a year and a half ago, I couldn't sleep one night. It was about 3am, and I was laying in the dark, when I suddenly remembered hearing about Bitcoin in the news. It seemed a vague and distant idea at the time, however over the next 6 hours, through lots of research and the BitcoinTalk forum, my obsession began. It first started with metting current community members, talking to them, learning more, expanding my knowledge on the subject. From there it quickly transitioned to buying some basic SHA-256 miners, learning about altcoins and mining them, even helping develop some, and trade them on exchanges. Shortly after that, life got busy, so I took a break, and came back a few months later, re-surfacing in the Bitcoin community, with a passion for Bitcoin gambling. I previously had a Primedice account and had been an active member there, and today I am a Moderator there.

Bitcoin, for me at least, was a huge eye-opener. I had no idea there was so much depth to it, and so much to learn. The concept of a virtual currency was something I had thought of as a kid, but obviously knew no way to implement it. So when I learned it actually existed, my fascination escalated.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences here too, I am curious to read them! :)

Originally got into Bitcoin when I saw an article about it in the Australian newspaper in the bubble of 2011. Curious of this 'investment vehicle' quite literally going up 1000%+ in a matter of days I looked into it. Can't quit pin point the bit where the concept clicked, but it didn't take long for me to become a full time Bitcoin addict.

I got into bitcoin when i saw news article in local Serbian news portal.
It was just about 1 month before mtgox and huge crash of bitcoin price.
Started collecting small amounts of it on faucets and small tasks for bitcoin.
Then i found Primedice and the rest is amazing history :) .

My story is similar :) . first i heard of bitcoin back in 2011 when the price crashed from 30 USD to 1-2 USD. unfortunately i didnt have the time back then to study it further because i was busy with other things. originally iam a Gold Bug so i already had a good understanding of money/currency/debt and so on (i recommend Mike Maloney).

after that i heard about bitcoin again in the begin of 2013 and then it got my full attention...for months (rabbit hole)...

iam glad to be here and to be one of the early adopters (like you all too!) :)

I was reading a Wired article on Bitcoin and the Silk Road back in April 2011 or so. After that I started to look into Bitcoin a bit more and thought the concept of a cryptocurrency was pretty awesome.

I remember thinking about e-gold or something like that back in 2010, and scoffing about it for a while, thinking Bitcoin was a scam.

I was busy and didn't think about it that much until 2011, then got busy again and tried to buy $10,000 worth in early 2013 when they were going for about um, was it $100 or $130 or $300 each at the time on Mt Gox? They rejected my ID to sign up because the address label on the back, while an official change of address label for my driver licence, didn't work out for them as ID. So I thought screw you, huffed and puffed a bit because I really wanted some of these Bitcoins, and mostly out of anger with Mt Gox didn't get back into it until 2015.

It was just pure magic to me, I was hooked, and had lots of help understanding it quickly from a colleague with a first class Honours in cryptanalysis. I'm still learning a lot, and boning up on my math to better understand other cryptos.

I just like shiny new things. Especially when I have a bit of time on my hands and stumble on something that turns into a real passion. Never felt such enthusiasm and excitement for a new technology before, and I've been programming since I was a small child. So it was big for me, outstanding. And of course I almost kill myself with the time I spend understanding it and trying to know everything there is to know about it!
