I want to start accepting bitcoin as payment for my business

Sat Dec 10, 2016 3:35 pm

Ok, I'm no techie and I tried to set up my site to accept bitcoin as a form of payment years ago but found it so confusing I never finished the process. So how do I start? I am going to need to have purchases deposited in dollars or at least have that option and I do use QucikBooks and see that there is an option to use BC as payment there too. I don't want to store anything on a smartphone as I don't have one, but I do believe this is the future of transactions even here in the US where my business is located. Any help would be great!

Thanks

Do you have a Brick and Mortar business, or is this online?

If online, https://openbazaar.org/ may be your best bet.

Offline, you can install a wallet on your desktop. There will probably be a "request payment" button, where you may be able to denote the amount in USD.

Just be sure to backup your wallet and protect it. Down the road, transferring larger funds into a "paper wallet".

I do offer my own payment processor which you could pay to have someone integrate down the road. There are many options and the best one will depend on your needs. I have an example for Python/WSGI integration here: https://github.com/coinfee/coinfee-pyth ... er/example

I'm happy to hear that you want to accept Bitcoin. The more places that do, the better.

as @iFixBTCmemoryIssues stated, Coinbase might have a really simple plug and play option for you... another is BitPay and https://www.coinify.com/ and http://www.gocoin.com/ all have similar plug ins... Now if you can have a developer do a little work for you (it's so much easier to install a Bitcoin Payment gateway than any other payment gate way by several orders of magnitude) you could use Mycelium Gear which I have touched yet but I lightly reviewed their APIs and I must say... I like it. There is also Bitcore and several others.

PM me if you need some assistance pushing in the right direction.

thanks for the responses, I'm glad to see there is some help because 4 years ago when I tried this there was little to no help at all.
So I do have a brick & morter store but I think that most of the sales using BC would be off our site, I have signed up with PitPay years ago and have gotten back in and to the point where I'm asked for a bank account or BC number. I'm not really sure if I want to give up my working business bank account, would it be better to use a seperate account? I'm not sure if you need a wallet if all sales are going directly into a bank, I would kind of like to have the option to be able to move BC into dollars when I choose if that is possible. If I need a wallet how do I choose which one is best?

Thank you all again, I really don't know why this is seemingly such a mystery to get set up as I truly think this is the future.

Thanks
Scott

Depending on your budget, my suggestion would be to register a new business and bank account solely for your Bitcoin related business. This way, your foundation is built as separate entities.

As for a wallet, it all depends on what you are seeking to achieve.

A quick and safe solution would be coinbase.com, as your funds are insured (even in their hotwallet). Blockchain.info also offers merchant services, however, the funds are not insured, though their company is based out of Switzerland and so you retain a decent amount of privacy.

For a dedicated, enterprise solution, I would suggest running your own node by using Bitcoin Unlimited: https://www.bitcoinunlimited.info

Need more help? Don't hesitate to ask questions, we are more than happy to help you!

Happy Holidays :)

A huge key to storing bitcoins is this, the more you keep offline, the better.

Invest in a trezor hardware wallet, backup the seed to an offsite, offline location.

Also, utilize paper cold storage for other amounts to get the 100% off grid.

What you need is "bitcoin payment gateway". You can get a lot results on Google, they provide APIs to conduct bitcoin payment. You may need some programming skills to get this sort of payment done.

So is BitPay a gateway? I have gotten to the point in their registration where they request a bank account and as I have stated I'm not comfortable giving my working business account to anyone, I do have another account I use to transfer money that I feel a bit better giving them. So if I do this will I still need a wallet?

Well, there are a few so I'm sure you will find something for yourself. I wanted to encourage you to go in this direction. I also run a business that accepts Bitcoins and these are very high ticket items but that's not an obstacle at all. As you said in your post.. it's the future BTC
