Quantum Computing: The Answer to Bitcoin Mining Centralization?

Tue Oct 04, 2016 7:32 pm

The quantity of energy Bitcoin mining consumes, and the related detrimental impact on the environment, is of great concern. Specifically, electricity continues to make up the largest cost associated with Bitcoin mining. Thanks to advances in quantum computing research, reductions in energy consumption and costs might be just around the corner.

While it might be true that quantum computing might reduce the energy consumption of bitcoin mining, but it does not mean that it solves mining centralization.

With cheaper energy, more individuals might wish to start mining, thereby increasing decentralization.

Has the cost of quantum computing being considered here? How many people/miners would be able to afford one of those babies?

Big mining companies will still trump over solo mining, even with cheaper energy. Having a larger capital means more mining power (assuming that an individual can even afford a quantum computer), which will still be better than solo mining.
