How much electricity is Bitcoin using world wide?

Sat Sep 24, 2016 3:37 pm

I did some quick calculations, but would like to know if I missed anything.

The global hash rate is 1,819,984 Terahash/second currently.
If we assume the Average miner in use at the moment is a Bitmain S7
Specifications:
1. Hash Rate: 5.06 TH/s ±5%
2. Power Consumption: 1278 W

That means it would take 1,819,984/ 5.06 = 359,680 S7s to equal the world wide global hash rate.

359,680 S7s times 1278W each = 459,671,848 Watts.

So the world wide Bitcoin network is using roughly half a Giga Watt of power.

Does that look right to everyone else?

You must be a mind reader, interesting ;)

So, 360K units = global hashrate.
