Dash Claims Another Debit Card

http://thedashtimes.com/2016/08/25/dash ... ebit-card/

You can now make everyday purchases at normal retailers using Dash, thanks to yet another instances of a functional Dash debit card.

Bitwala, a cryptocurrency bill-paying service, also offers a debit card. In addition to Bitcoin, the card can be topped up with several different cryptocurrencies, including Dash.

According to Jeff Gallas, Community Manager for Bitwala, the card’s ShapeShift functionality allows it to run exclusively off of Dash:

“You can use Dash to top up the Bitwala Debit card and also pay all your bills and bank transfers in Dash. So living exclusively off Dash (or any other supported Altcoin) is definitely possible! Not only in theory, but in practice!”

Bitwala may very well be the first publicly available Dash debit card. Shakepay.co also claims a functional Dash card, however it is still in beta and not widely released yet. SpectroCoin has also announced a Dash debit card set for release mid-August.

Bitcoin Has A Significant Advantage In The Debit Card Game

While this advancement is important to Dash’s continuing development and adoption, Bitcoin still retains a firm lead in the cryptocurrency debit card competition. Currently, there are at least 10 Bitcoin debit card providers that take the currency directly to top up the card’s balance, while only one card takes Dash, and even then only by first using ShapeShift to convert it to Bitcoin.

Compared to Dash, Bitcoin’s debit card offerings offer two distinct advantages: geography and privacy. To begin with, only two Bitcoin debit cards, from Coinbase and BitPay, are currently available in the United States. Bitwala’s is not, meaning that Dash users are out of luck. Additionally, Bitwala requires customers to submit government identification for AML/KYC compliance in all cases. CryptoPay and Wirex, which currently do not accept Dash, currently offer the ability for Bitcoin debit cards to be anonymous/unverified, so long as they remain under the $2,500 lifetime limit, giving Bitcoin users a more private, if temporary, option.

It Is Theoretically Possible To Live Exclusively Off Of Dash

Thanks to Bitwala and ShapeShift’s convenient partnership, it is possible, and in some cases even feasible, to live off of an exclusively-Dash income. One can easily pay one’s major bills with the cryptocurrency, which covers most of one’s expenses. With the addition of a debit card, now one can safely say they can live entirely by spending Dash, albeit in an indirect way.

The next step towards full adoption would be to increase the portion of goods and services available to be purchased directly with Dash, without relying on third-party systems for conversion.
