Speaking out against censorship is most important when you aren't the one being censored.

Thu Jun 09, 2016 3:02 pm

Today Erik Voorhees thought he had been censored on /r/Bitcoin regarding a post where we discussed the block size, scaling, censorship, and other topics. He rightly tried to make a big deal about it, but then apologized with this post when he found out he was mistaken in this specific instance.
I'd like to point out that he may have made a mistake in assuming this specific post was intentionally being censored, but he wasn't wrong in principle. The censorship at /r/Bitcoin is very very real.

Last year, I took time out of my day to explain why I thought bigger blocks will mean more decentralization, not less in this article.

A link to my article was submitted to /r/Bitcoin and was promptly censored by Theymos himself:

Erik, you may have made a mistake regarding your specific post from earlier today, but the censorship on /r/Bitcoin is alive and well, and is the source of 99% of the animosity that is tearing our ecosystem apart.
Ending the censorship would do more to heal the wounds and move bitcoin ahead than any other single act.

Will bigger blocks reduce the fee? It seems to be getting higher and higher, can only imagine it to increase more after the halving. Bitcoin is slowly turning into currency for riches, whether it is spending or earning.

Yes, increasing the supply of block space will help to reduce the fee for using a portion of that block space.

i wonder why Theymos has so much free time to censor all this stuff. normally he must be pretty busy with counting the dollars/bitcoins he made from donations to his forum. maybe he wants to defend his scheme this way. censorship is his tool.

You can use Ethereum (ETH) for free to low fees, it is not Bitcoin although it is much better than Bitcoin. It's instant!

I now move BTC to ETH and then just spend with ETH. To do this, signup at an exchange like DAX (https://www.gdax.com). Sell a bunch of Bitcoin and then buy Ethereum.

If a client isn't accepting Ethereum, I have my guys setup Ethereum for them. If a third party I am purchasing from isn't accepting Ethereum, I too tell them to accept it. For large clients, people will listen to you and integrate.

On a technical level for Bitcoin, I support Bitcoin Unlimited and Classic for larger blocks. While this doesn't help with the fees, use Ethereum in that case. It's free or near free and instant (3 seconds).

10/10 people I speak to are starting to use Ethereum the same way they would use Bitcoin, easy peasy.

Now, if and when Ethereum shoots up into the hundreds of dollars like Bitcoin, I'll be one happy investor on top of it all!!!!!!!!!

Defend which scheme? The one you support (Core scheme), the Blockstream scheme, the one Theymos supports, the Miner scheme, there are so many schemes in Bitcoin at the moment all working together, keeping the block-size capped, gouging fees, attacking networks and trying to control your Bitcoin.

Awh Litecoinguy, you know we are right, come to the right side :)

One thing I am stuck on is what do I say when all these people who turned their back against you comes to you begging for mercy, do I say, "yeah, you made a mistake, no problem" or "fuck off". To most people I guess I will have to welcome them with open arms.

@iFixBTCmemoryIssues, Can you tell me how to set up ethereum wallet and everything, I would prefer to know about it in and out before deciding to purchase any of it. I am confident in my abilities to use/store BTC safely but can't say the same about ETH. The exchange in my sig sells ETH too though.

Of course, it's very simple, depending on your OS, there is a README.txt in each zip:

Windows x64: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releas ... -0-7-4.zip
WIndows x32: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releas ... -0-7-4.zip
OSX: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releas ... -0-7-4.zip
Linux x64: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releas ... -0-7-4.zip
Linux x32: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releas ... -0-7-4.zip

Pretty much everything you need to know about Ethereum (ETH): https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comme ... l_need_to/

I will have one of my guys work on putting together a tutorial with graphics with-in the next couple of weeks and publish it on this forum for anybody interested in step-by-step instructions to do the same.

If you need any help sooner, send me a PM and I will do my best to help you!

I disagree with Litecoinguy.

It is always the best investment advice to diversify into as many assets as you can. If you hold for example; Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin, your chances of a good return on investment is much higher. For example, if you bought $100,000 worth of Ethereum in December of 2015, its value would currently be worth around ~$300,000. I've used this strategy on both digital assets and stocks, it has made me fortunes.

I am definitely not saying to buy $100K worth of Ethereum. Instead, buy small amounts of each asset for the best results ($1000 - $10,000) or whatever you are comfortable with.

As for Ethereum and the technology itself, it definitely is superior to Bitcoin. I can build better applications as a business to run on Ethereum than I can with Bitcoin. What takes months of programming time for Bitcoin, only takes 3 to 4 days for Ethereum. As Litecoinguy said, it will take at least 3 years for Bitcoin to play catch-up with Ethereum, if it can. Bitcoin is under attack from governments and banks to change the network into a settlement layer with p2p cash through Lightning hubs (a permissioned, monitored and seizable system). This will cause the Bitcoin network to lose massive amounts of users.

Investors and holders in general are diversifying into other digital assets. I have read about investors selling their entire Bitcoin portfolio and while I don't recommend that - I do recommend diversifying.

Bitcoin's market-cap is inflated, the price increases aren't justified by credible news, as an investor - I'm not confident in Bitcoin at this point in time. Similar to Warren Buffet, sometimes you have to "sell" and "buy" back in later.

I have 20 years experience in working with finance, this is my advice.

Definitely don't leave Bitcoin behind, investors should instead diversify.

To clarify a couple of my posts:

1) Massive amounts of users are leaving Bitcoin as in long-term investors and developers are beginning to invest with Ethereum and other digital assets. My figure "massive" is when 10% or more of your user-base is looking at alternatives. I'd say this is around 30%, but let's keep it conservative at 10%. Take Coinbase.com for example, they actually see the future as mostly Ethereum and they hold some $1B in Bitcoin.

2) Nobody is going to use permissioned Bitcoin technology, they signed up for a p2p digital cash system. If you refer to Roger Ver's posts, the owner of Bitcoin.com, his sentiment is the same.

From what I recall last, the blockchain size of ethereum is around ~15GB. I will login to one of my nodes and post a definite update shortly.

Jaxx is good, I have created my Ethereum wallet, the address changes after each transaction and some sites do not recognize the address, which is strange. There's also a DAO tab in it, another alt-coin I presume which uses same address as Ethereum?

That's right, Ethereum addresses change after each transaction. This is actually one of the con's I don't like about Bitcoin addresses, they are static.

The DAO tab is not an alt-coin, it is for buying into Ethereum's daohub.org which is a crowd-fund investing for holders of Ethereum.
