question about address splitting after i send some bitcoin out

Fri Dec 14, 2018 4:39 pm

Hello all,

I have used a bitcoin.info wallet address for a long time to store a little bitcoin on. And always monitored it using Block Explorer on www.blockchain.com. This gave me a neat list of everything that happened on that address.

Recently i sent a little bitcoin to other accounts ( 2x just to test). And much to my surprise when i looked at the blockchain explorer, it showed 2 destination addresses : the real destination and another one. And the number on the second one is higher then just the extra fee.

On blockchain.info all the numbers still seem to be correct. But it seems the out transactions have made my remaining coins jump to other addresses that are also mine (but i can't find them on the site). And my original address now has a zero balance on the block explorer.

Does anyone know what has happend here, how i can trace all my blockchain.info addresses and if possible put everything back in my original address.

Thanks for any help on this!

Regards,
Rick

Hi Rick,

Sending bitcoins is like paying with cash. If you have a $10 dollar bill and you want to buy something that costs $7 you cannot rip the $10 dollar bill into smaller pieces. You have to hand over the $10 dollar bill and then get $3 back.

When you receive a transaction (e.g., bought some bitcoin or received bitcoin from anyone for anything) the amount that you receive in a transaction is like a dollar bill in that amount. When you go to spend it you have to hand over the entire dollar bill. Or if you need to send more than that amount then it will be combined will another (or more) in your wallet (like a wallet of different denominations of dollar bills).

The change is returned to you. It may be not be returned to the very same address that you sent from but it is returned to your wallet. (If you want to use the same address for change you can do that with some wallets.)

Within your Blockchain.info wallet (or it's now Blockchain.com) you should be able to view all of the addresses which belong to your wallet. I haven't opened my blockchain.info wallet for a while so I do not remember exactly where to click. I'll take a look later on today.
