Trains as a better analogy for capacity then busses.

Sun May 22, 2016 4:30 am

I've seen the full block debate compared to riders on a bus many times. While a good analogy I don't think it is quite correct. I think a better one is comparing it to a train. With a train you have the engine (block), cars (transactions), and track (internet). The engine was designed to pull a nearly unlimited amount of car with the only limits on the system being the storage depots. The tracks can handle the weight of the cars but limits the speed the train can get from point A to point B. The cars have limited cargo units (lets say for simplicity 100 units per car). Right now miners can set the max number of cars on the train as they have always been able to do. The problem is the engine is being told it can't go if there are any more than 10 cars. The simplest solution is to remove the limiter on the engine and allow more cars to be added by those miners that want more cars. SegWit redesigns the cars so they can hold 170 units per car but the new cars are untested. They might do fine but they might fall right off the tracks. Even if they work the new 10 new 170 unit cars will soon be full again. LN works around the 10 car limit by setting up stations the cargo units have to sit in and wait for trucks to move the cargo off the tracks. The stations are centralized, hold cargo units, charge fees, and might have government inspectors watching over where the cargo comes from and goes to. We don't know as the new stations and planes haven't been fully designed yet. The question is why do we need the planes at all to do what the train was designed for? The proper procedure is to increase the number of cars now to get the cargo through while increased capacity cars are designed and tested for safety. Future transportation systems with faster routes might be necessary in the future and should be looked into but those are not yet needed and the work should go into the existing train not a system to derail its original purpose of moving all cargo to the depots for storage.

Hope this makes some sense I was damn bored today.
