Blockchain.info wallet questions

Wed May 11, 2016 2:34 am

How safe are your private keys (which I believe are stored in your browser?) from being compromised by malware or something else?

I need something that is safe yet smooth and convenient for making quick payments to my users and customers. Appreciate any advice.

Your keys are only as safe as your computer is. If your computer let's say has keylogger malware on it, an attacker could get your password and login to your account. But the actual Blockchain.info Wallet is safe and your private key is safe as well. I would highly recommend you turn on two-factor authentication on your wallet. So even if your computer was compromised, the attacker would need access to your mobile device too in order to access your wallet.

Thanks. So as far as we know there isn't any type of mechanism/malware that can extract one's private keys from the browser am I correct?

I'm sure there is malware that can do pretty much anything to data on your machine or browser if it were infected. If you think your machine is compromised, you can instead make a wallet with the mobile app and then sync it to the web wallet later after you have secured your machine.

You should not use any browser add-ons, they could steal your keys or redirect your transactions to their own btc address.

That's interesting. Would google chrome allow malicious add-ons when you search in extensions?

Anything can be infiltrated.

Keep anything higher than you can afford to lose in cold storage.

Yes, it has already happened and google doesn't seem to protect users enough:

I use blockchain wallet and so far had no issues. But there is no 100% guarantee that it will not be compromised. So, it's better not to keep all your coins just in one wallet and also to have something in cold storage, especialy the larger amounts.

Once you get beyond the beginner stage, I would say this may be a typical advanced user setup. Not everyone does this, but think of power users and people that are really invested in bitcoin.

1) Have an online web wallet that syncs to your mobile app for on the go spending (read that as not all your funds in this wallet)
2) Have a desktop client program on your local machine for a good chunk of your funds that go to your spending wallet to refill.
3) Have a hardware wallet for all the rest of your bitcoin for savings and safe keeping and best security.

Of course all need to be regularly backed up.
