Scanning certain BTC QR codes not working on iOS

Thu Sep 27, 2018 5:33 am

The Bitcoin.com wallet on iOS is currently unable to send BTC to certain brands of wallets when scanning QR codes from these wallets with the "Scan" button on the home page. It's been like this for a while, but the problem doesn't seem to affect BCH payments.

If you use the scan button on the home page, and then scan a QR code from Bockchain.info, GreenAddress, Bitpay or Abra, then you get to the "Choose Wallet" and then "Enter Amount" pages. And from there you are able to enter the amount and send the BTC. So far, so good.

However, if you scan a QR code from the bitWallet, BRD or Jaxx wallet, for example, you get a popup menu showing the correct scanned BTC address and three choices, i.e. "Add to contacts", "Send payment to this address" and "Copy to clipboard". And after you choose "Send payment to this address", you get stuck on the next page since you are not able to enter an amount or get to the next page.

It seems like there is something different or wrong with those QR codes. But even if that's the case, none of the other wallets mentioned above have this issue when scanning any of the same QR codes, including the BitPay wallet, which shares the same code base as the Bitcoin.com wallet.

However, if you first choose the BTC wallet, and click "Send" from there, and then press "Scan QR code", then it works sometimes, but not always. It seems to depend what actions you have done before. I haven't been able to figure it out. But it works unreliably. Sometimes I also get a message saying "Invalid Address", but the address is fine and works if you copy paste it instead.

I saw at least one other person having the same issue in the megathread. But I think creating a separate post for this issue is important, since it needs attention. I have tried this on 3 different iOS devices (running iOS 11 and 12) and get the same result on each. Each wallet has one BTC and one BCH wallet.

I do everything I can to support Bitcoin.com and BCH, but it's really hard to recommend the Bitcoin.com wallet to new people when it has bugs like this. Hopefully the developers already know about it and a fix is coming shortly.

Hi Don, thank you for reporting this. A note has now been passed along to the Bitcoin.com team.
