The first question that comes to my mind is what data (related to the use of firearms) would be tracked on the blockchain that would help prevent gang violence, child mortality, etc.?

The applications a blockchain can be used for are literally limitless and most of those applications will significantly benefit society.

That's why Ethereum is so clever and exciting, it makes it easier for companies, organizations, governments, start-ups, etc., to use blockchain technology for their project. They don't have to figure out how to build one on their own if they don't have the R&D budget or time to do it.
