Trying out purse.io again

Fri Feb 19, 2016 11:22 pm

I've used Purse in the past. It has not been an overly great experience so far, mainly for the following reasons:
- Discounted prices on Amazon (ie different suppliers, optimizing for taxes, using coupons, etc) combined with Gyft discount and high purse fees meant that Purse often was more expensive - or at least not as much cheaper as needed to make the effort worth the while
- An annoying experience with a buyer who started nagging to release the escrow the minute the package arrived - he sent me numerous messages while I was asleep and I woke up to a dispute report. This was my indication the package had arrived.

Both reasons combined caused me to say: it's really not worth my while.

But now I am ready to try it again, after seeing many positive posts by ronnieb. And because discounts are now much higher - It may even be worth my while to deal with the occasional annoying buyer.

Here is my order, in the Amazon wishlist:
Image

To see what Amazon would charge, including taxes and shipping if I ordered it directly, I completed the order right up to the last step. One more click and I would have paid. That is the only place where Amazon really tells you the correct price (that I know of, at least).
Image
The order would have been $48.57, but as I would have paid with Gyft for a 3% discount, my payment price would have been 97% * $48.57 = $47.11. That's what I am looking to compare purse with.

So I imported the wishlist into Purse. I chose 45% discount (which will give me a much lower discount after costs).
Image

And then I placed the order.
Image

I'll update once anything happens to the order. I have learned from ronnieb that these higher discount orders may take some time to complete. And if they fail that you just try them again. So I'll be doing just that.

Great idea & love the screenshots!

But you might want to try a lower discount rate. Purse's average discount rate is 20%. Lately I've been getting 30-35%, but you may have to wait quite a while to get 45% off.

Hope your order turns out great! :)

Thanks! I'm not in a hurry. I always try the extremes first (assuming it doesn't kill me!) and then go more reasonable if need be ;)

Purse sent me the following email confirmation:

Image

There is a small error in this confirmation - I have ordered two sets of plastic caps and the email confirmation only confirms one. It appears quantity of orders is not displayed here. Oh well, nothing big.

I also only just now noticed that there is a difference of + $0.11 between what Purse ($48.68) thinks the Amazon order costs, and what Amazon ($48.57) itself claims it would cost (compare the two screenshots of final orders above). Again, nothing big, but it is interesting to see that there is a small bug here.

The discount - if the order goes through, is $48.57 - $31.78 = $16.79. This is $16.79 / $48.57 = 34.57%. 45% selected discount results in a sub-35% discount after purse costs. It would be cleaner if the slider in the Select your discount was the discount AFTER purse costs.

You guys are more aggressive than I when using Purse.io. I have always used Purse Instant for a 5% discount and free 2 day Amazon Prime shipping, Never had an order take longer than 2 days to receive.

i don't think purse instant offers anything on top of Amazon + Gyft, but it does limit choice (forced to use Amazon as a seller).

I just tried how much the saving is at 5%, and added a $13.99 item in the shopping cart. This item becomes $15.11 after taxes. Paying with Gyft for a 3% discount and the item is $14.66.

According to purse, this item is $15.14 after tax. After discounts and after adding the purse fee, the item is $14.53.

So ordering through purse is $0.13 cleaper for a $15.11 item (+ tax). That is just 0.9% cheaper than Amazon + Gyft. For that price difference, I prefer the convenience of ordering it from my own amazon account.

@bitkilo

I'd recommend using some sort of e-box here in the United States as your address.

For example, MBE - (Mail Boxes Etc) - partners with a few e-box services.

Your Amazon items (purchased through Purse.io) will be shipped to the e-box service here in the United States and then forwarded to a MBE office in Australia.

When your package arrives at the MBE office in Australia you'll pay them a relatively small fee upon picking the items up :)

Unless you are ordering something which weights like 20 pounds or something the fee shouldn't be much (you'd need to check the rates to make sure).

It may even be cheaper than regular postage from the United States to Australia.

@arnoudk, this is a great post!! I like posts like this because you can email them to friends and family to show them the advantages that Bitcoin is beginning to herald.

I have been using purse almost weekly, if not daily. when I do post like this I will often times take the max discount for demonstration purposes. I am always shocked at how fast this system is. The last couple 50% off purchases I made were shipped the next day!!!

Again, great post!

My order got cancelled! Oh no!

It seems I broke some undocumented Purse rule. (Or I just didn't read the documentation!)

I had imported the items from my Amazon wishlist into Purse, and then I used my Amazon wishlist for something else. It seems you are not allowed to change the contents of your wishlist for as long as the order is active (I didn't know that!) so it got cancelled.

This was the email:
Image

The website confirmed the same thing:
Image

I fixed the wish list in Amazon, and re-entered the order. It is a new order, with the exact same settings and content, now "waiting for buyer" again.

I guess it really makes sense not to change the wishlist, as that is what the buyer uses to purchase the items!

Purse sent me the following email, advising me to drop the discount level for faster shipping times.

I decided to ignore it - but I'll post a screenshot of it all the same. I don't mind if this order takes days, or weeks, to complete. I am in no hurry.

And then, less than two hours later:

Order Purchased!

I'm amazed, that someone paid +45% for basically buying bitcoin, which allows me to shop at Amazon for -35% (the other 10% goes to Purse).

Here's the email I got.
Image

A quick check on the website confirmed:
Image
Note: I have removed the name of the buyer, and order numbers, from the screenshot... but you can probably guess where they would go.

And if I look at the details:
Image
Image
I decided to ask explicitly for the tracking number(s) once they become available, so that I can monitor if these packages arrive.

The Amazon Wishlist is now empty, which I guess is a confirmation that the orders were purchased.
Image

I'm repeating myself, but I am amazed at how quickly this high discount order was fulfilled ;)

I'll update again, once I have some more info to share.

Just clicking around the purse pages, I noticed that the USD value of the escrow is $32.18. It appears that is what the system paid, which is a bit confusing because I had submitted the order at $31.79. I guess that the order was fulfilled at $31.79, but because the exchange rate of bitcoin is very volatile, that the value of the bitcoin used to make this purchase is now $32.18.

Image

Purse will use the market value of bitcoin at the time of the purchase. This means that you win some, you lose some. I guess the exchange rate moved in the direction that benefits the buyer this time.

I'm not entirely sure how to calculate the actual discount I received. What exchange rate is fair? I'm thinking the one at the time of the purchase, which would mean that I paid $31.79 and not $32.18. It's something to take into consideration, though, when purchasing with bitcoin - the exchange rate can be a bit volatile.

I just now noticed, that on the Amazon wish list, you can change the "Filter & Sort" dropdown to include Purchased items.

I did exactly that, and now I get the following wish list:
Image

I've got a good feeling that this is working out great.

The order status has moved to "Shipping"!

I've asked the seller (twice!) to send me a tracking code, but this has not been responded to. Interesting. Seems like I am not going to get any tracking codes for this order ;)
