Trash can

Mon Mar 14, 2016 11:47 pm

Just a quick question. I noticed that the trash can seems to have been removed. I'm not sure how long this has been the case - but I noticed when a spam message that I commented on (pointing out it was most likely a scam) went missing and I could not find it.

Why has it been removed so completely? I liked the transparency of seeing what mods delete. Now, social control is much more difficult.

I don't have an answer for you, the admins will have to comment. But does this link work for you by manually going to it? trashcan/

Heh, no just mostly spam. Nothing worth actually going through to be honest.

I assume as much ;)
If you want to be transparent, though, having the spam visible for x amount of time - like it used to be - would be a good idea.

I'm not really interested in spam, of course. But I'd like this forum to be as transparent as possible.

I agree 100%. My guess is it's a tech error or something done by mistake where regular users can't see it.

I believe the trashcan board would be best to remain private due to the kind of posts that end up on that board.

I couldn't disagree more. Keeping that board private means that there is no public control of censorship possible. It is the censorship issue that caused this forum to be founded.

You can add all the warnings you like, make it harder to navigate to, click away a warning before being able to access it.

But blocking it, is a very bad idea in my opinion.

Without the possibility of checks by the public, the moderation power can be abused. Even the mere suggestion that it CAN be abused should be reason to not go down this path.

Yep good point, i did not think about censorship transparency when posting that it should remain private.

My main concern was that all the posts that end up in that board are always scams and/or spam so thought it would be best they get buried forever.
I got a feeling that all posts in the trashcan board auto delete after a few week though i could be wrong on that.

There was also talk about having the moderator actions public so as there is full transparency on what we do, not sure if it's running yet but i think all mods agreed they would be happy with that.

Sure, I get that the trash is full of spam and scams ;)

A few weeks and then an auto-prune is no issue for the trash can. That leaves enough time to find any posts that went missing and have any problems corrected.

So... who is going to restore access? It's still above my pay grade to look at the trash can!

I posted the query to the admins, still waiting to hear back. If I had to guess, the view was disabled by a technical issue, and not on purpose (just guessing). If it's a bug, then it will need to be prioritized along with everything else. Thanks for keeping up on this! :)

Thanks.

We'll have to make a list of open requests for the forum, I guess. There are a few that I can recall that are waiting for something...

- Trash can visibility
- Page navigation of recent topics
- Unread posts link for recent topics list

The bottom two are quite old requests. I am sure they are waiting for a really good reason, but perhaps we could have some more insight in the "product backlog" (scrum term).
