One of Bitcoin's Biggest Investments Might Finally Be Paying Off.

Bitcoin appears to finally be making headway with one of its less-appreciated, but critical challenges: recruitment.

Simply put, the number of developers contributing to the cryptocurrency's open-source code is suddenly on the rise. Sure enough, there have been at least 21 code submissions approved from new contributors over the past 50 days - and that's no small feat given developers have struggled for years to entice new coders to work on the project.

And while the number of merges over the nearly two-month period didn't jump up drastically, seeing new names within the Github repository is a welcome sight given that most of the hundreds of contributions to bitcoin over the past several years have been coded by a few dozen veterans.

According to several developers CoinDesk interviewed, there isn't a direct correlation they can point to explain the increase, though there are likely contributors. Indeed, for some it's a strong sign serious investments of time and effort in training and academic programs are finally paying off.

"Many educational and training efforts have lately helped to introduce new developers to Bitcoin Core and the bitcoin software ecosystem," Ferdinando Ametrano, a professor at Politecnico di Milano who has served as a program director at bitcoin developer conferences, told CoinDesk.

Ametrano is, of course, talking about efforts such as Chaincode Labs, which has a residency program in New York where prolific bitcoin developers like John Newbery have been giving their time to helping new recruits.

After attending Chaincode's first residency in 2016, Newbery has now taught 11 participants from places like Israel and Hong Kong.

Angel Investor Amassed 10,000 Bitcoins Amid 2018 Price Slump.

Cai Wensheng, an angel investor from China and chairman of photo retouching app provider Meitu, says he has achieved his goal of accruing 10,000 bitcoins.

In an open group Q&A session with tech entrepreneur Wang Feng on WeChat on Thursday, Cai disclosed that although he was holding a single bitcoin in January of this year, he moved to increase his portfolio over the first quarter of 2018 amid the bearish market's lower prices.

Soon after December's record high round $20,000, the price of bitcoin started dropping in January. It reached a low for the year so far below $6,000 in February, before climbing again to over $9,700 at press time. According to CoinDesk's Bitcoin Price Index, Cai's holdings are now worth around $96 million.

Oracle to Launch Its Blockchain Platform This Month.

Software giant Oracle is all set to publicly launch its blockchain-as-a-service platform, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The California-based multinational is said to be launching the platform this month, with apps based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) to follow in June, the news source states, citing Oracle's president of product development, Thomas Kurian.

As reported by CoinDesk, Oracle first unveiled the enterprise-grade blockchain cloud platform in October 2017, saying at the time that it is looking at the technology as a way to extend and streamline its existing cloud services.

Frank Xiong, Oracle's group vice president of Blockchain Cloud Service, said at the initial unveiling that the firm aims to attract both large and small firms, with pricing based on transaction volume.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has officially launched a blockchain-powered crowdfunding platform for startups in the country.

Dubbed LiVE, the new crowdfunding marketplace from the SET is built on a blockchain that enables startups and small enterprises to access funding from venture capital funds and institutional investors directly via peer-to-peer trading.

According to an announcement by the SET, eight companies from both public and private sectors have joined the platform at launch with a further 50 companies set to join the blockchain-powered funding platform.

As JP Morgan Chase's new blockchain lead, Christine Moy has big shoes to fill. And a quandary to resolve.

Moy took over last month from Amber Baldet, one of the most prominent figures in blockchain, after she left to form an as-yet-unnamed startup. Around the same time, Baldet announced her departure, word leaked out that JP Morgan was considering a spin-out of Quorum, the ethereum-based, open-source project that had been the cornerstone of the bank's blockchain work.

To be clear, those deliberations do not mean Quorum is struggling - big corporates like JP Morgan tend to shelve failing projects, not spin them out into funded entities.

Walmart Patent Envisions Blockchain-Powered Delivery Fleets.

Automated delivery cars or trucks connected via blockchain could one day deliver packages for Walmart, new patent filings suggest.

The retail giant hinted at the possible use case in an application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in October and published Thursday. Per the documents, the patent centers around technology tools to secure "restricted access areas" at a customer's home that would receive packages from the autonomous ground vehicles (AVGs), as Wal-mart calls them.

Much of the application itself doesn't mention the technology, but at one point, Walmart mentions how blockchain could serve as part of a solution for "authentication-based access and encryption" that would allow the vehicles to access those restricted areas.

Additionally, that distributed network could serve as a way to track and authenticate the goods themselves.
