A study published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the high cost of medication and the growing number of on-line shoppers is increasingly encouraging people to buy a product over the internet, leaving them vulnerable to the counterfeit product.
These counterfeits are the cause of over 120,00 deaths a year in Africa alone from Malaria. This problem is so big that the European Parliament has introduced the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) which has been in place since January 2013 and the US Congress passed the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) later in 2013.
Both of these initiatives laid out a framework and legal requirements to ensure that the origins of drugs were tracked back to the manufacturer. They paved the way for solutions to manage verification of drugs and mandated the use of serial numbers at the point of manufacture.
Enter Checkitsreal with a new Blockchain and app-based ecosystem that allows anyone to verify a product as real by simply scanning a QR code with a phone based app. The app can also be configured to identify that the product has been sold and is no longer available for purchase protecting both the consumer and the supplier. Batches or lots of product can also be tracked as they move through the supply chain and are handed off to packagers and distributors.
Checkitsreal has two separate brands, both of which use the same technology architecture. Checkitsreal is their ubiquitous brand, applying to all products.
Verifymymeds brand is specifically for medicine. Whilst the technology is basically the same, they take a slightly different approach with verifymymeds. Fake meds are a 110$ billion annual industry and one million people lose their lives each year as a result of counterfeit medication. So. the mission is to reduce that number.
