I have never understood why it is important, to the extent of it being a showstopper, to have the miners and the server processing the blockchain in the same place.

Why not place the miners in the place with the cheapest power and the blockchain servers in the place with the fastest Internet and lowest latency. This could quite easily and comfortably be in different countries - different continents even.
