Uber Losing Millions to Hackers

Sat Jan 23, 2016 8:49 am

New York, NEW YORK, Saturday, January 23rd, 2016 -- A post titled, "You are purchasing a cracked Uber account. This can be used for free trips until the account is closed, Do not change any info. Use safely." continued to be circulated around as of Friday on https://bitcointalk.org.

Uber has a serious problem, fraud. Fraud from hackers are providing free rides to thousands of people on a daily basis and costing the company millions of dollars while Uber customers are left dealing with the aftermath. To date, Bitcoin Investigations has uncovered losses of $40.6 Million since October 2015.

"We tested the end-service, ordered an Uber from this seller and to our surprise the account worked" quoted Jason Wexley of Bitcoin Investigations. "Under law, we committed theft". "Afterwards, we paid the driver in cash and contacted the owner of the Uber account".

Warning, this part of the article contains graphic language. The following day, Bitcoin Investigations contacted the seller, moniker "The Prophecy" to tell him that he is being investigated by Bitcoin Investigations. The seller replied, "fuck uber, i dont care, go fuck yourself".

Until Uber fixes this theft, innocent customers will be once again dealing with the call of fraud to their bank.

It would seem that Uber may need 2-factor authentication for its customers!

Ha! Sharing uber accounts like netflix accounts I love it. Obviously wrong, just very interesting to me the similarities between stealing an online and "in person" account. 2fa might be too much for most of the normies, but shouldn't the driver be checking that you have the same picture as the person who paid for the ride or something?

I read this post and was quite suspicious but after finding the Bitcointalk post and seeing many people also vouch for the service, it seems legit (in the sense this is happening). I'm not sure where the $40M figure comes from, or if you just mean what you have discovered overall through your investigations in other services too, but whatever this person is using to defraud Uber seems to be working, and accepting bitcoin as payment is working for them as well. I wonder how long until Uber figures it out?

I think its not that sure if the guy hacks accounts or "just" uses stolen CCs to make them.
