Can bitcoin or another crypto be used to verify my identity?

Fri Oct 02, 2015 1:21 pm

I see members here talking about snatching up user names to use here and some suspicion that some users may not be the originals. What are ways to use crypto for identification.

I can see that just posting an address is one way, any input?

Well, you can use bitcoin (public/private key cryptography) to sign addresses to prove your identity. This is one way to go about it. LiteCoinGuy did a cool write up on how to sign bitcoin addresses from the Blockchain Wallet and Bitcoin Core, to show users how to do it, read that post here: post1185.html

Also, before bitcoin, many people use PGP to sign messages to prove their identity. PGP is still used today, probably more so today than anytime in history (I would guess, because of things such as NSA snooping, Snowden leaks, etc!). PGP is a great way to encrypt messages, but also to prove your identity and sign messages. Chris wrote a post on a beginners guide to PGP here if you want to take a look: post1058.html

I hope this helps!
