XTnodes.com: Added support for Bitcoin Unlimited. See the number of BU nodes & blocks in all graphs

Fri Dec 25, 2015 12:53 am

I have added support for Bitcoin Unlimited on XTnodes.com.

You can now see several graphs of the number of Bitcoin Unlimited nodes and blocks.

Bitcoin Unlimited is great because it works in tandem with Bitcoin XT. They share the same block version number and so both work toward activating Bitcoin XT's 75% threshold.

Very cool.

I hope we can soon get 50% hashing power for bigger blocks, so we can fork. (Or should we try to fork with a minority of the hashing power?)

I'm not sure what the best strategy is for increasing bigger-blocks hashing power. I would have thought miners would realize it is in their interests to use bitcoin unlimited and slowly raise the block limit to a level they are comfortable with.

If they don't though, how long will it take for new pro-big block pools to take over the hashing power?

I am still researching Bitcoin Unlimited for an article but at first glance it appears to be a last ditch attempt to keep XT alive by Andrew Stone and Peter Rizun.

I would not be so quick to write the xt obituary. It is the most likely alternative to core in case the core devs fail to deliver on time.

If transaction volume were to increase to a sustained unsustainable level today, the choices today are
1. Do nothing. Transactions would be slow, unreliable and expensive. You could call that a working fee market, I call it the cryptocurrency equivalent of a minimum wage law. It is a barrier to entry that strikes those who have most to gain.
2. Wait for core to implement something. Hardly an acceptable strategy in case of an emergency.
3. Switch to XT or BIP101. It is available and ready to be implemented. It has been tested and could solve the capacity problem immediately.
4. Switch to BU. Although I subscribe to the logic of unlimited blocks I do not think most miners do.

In this scenario I really think option 3 will be chosen and implemented.

Waiting three months or so for Segregated Witness to be integrated into Bitcoin Core sounds reasonable and has the support of core developers and major industry figures.

Agreed that it SOUNDS reasonable. But it seems you are comparing something that exists to something that does not exist, on equal footing. That is a logical fallacy.

If they build it, and prove that it works, AND if it has industry support as-implemented, THEN it sounds reasonable to go down that path.

And now we have 511 xt nodes and 61 Bitcoin Unlimited nodes! This is the most alternative nodes I've seen in a while.
