TheMerkle - Bitcoin Mixing Services Pose Certain Risks

Fri Dec 18, 2015 4:09 pm

The topic of coin mixers to anonymize Bitcoin transactions has been kicked around for quite some time now: While it may seem only normal for people to mix up their Bitcoin transaction history at some point, there is also the pressing question of which services can be trusted. The short answer to that question is absolutely no one, as coin mixers are third-party service providers: However, Bitcoin exchanges aren’t that much better.

Here is a quote from the referenced article:
In the end, there is no real tool – nor reason – as to why people would need to anonymize their Bitcoin balance to begin with.
Ask anyone who had their Coinbase account suspended because they sent earnings from a gambling site direct to Coinbase. Mixing services provide a needed service but I would not trust any advice from TheMerkle on the subject.

So how to find a mixing service that will not run off with your funds? Ask yourself who needs to mix bitcoin the most (darknet vendors) and where do they go for advice: deepdotweb would be a good start.

I've personally used BitBlender on several occasions and never had any problems with them. But as with anything in Bitcoin, past experiences don't always guarantee future results.

Also, a related post I did on this topic recently: dev-tech-talk/bitcoin-privacy-and-the-b ... t3283.html
