Hello,
I have a wallet that I have not opened since Jun 2016, public address is 1Naj3FBzyi5AVMkt8BXTLi8imaDqcWUK4C.
When I located that address on blockchain.org & blockexplorer.com, it displayed for me a balance of 0.3787 BTC. To test that the wallet still "worked", I had a friend transfer me 0.0056BTC. Both sites now show the wallet with a balance of 0.3844 BTC.
However, when I open the wallet in MultiBit (client i used when i got my first bitcoins in 2013, now no longer supported apparently!), the available balance it displays for me is 0.0056BTC - the amount my friend transferred - not 0.3787BTC as blockchain & blockexplorer shows me! Also strange is that the sum of my transaction history in the Multibit client is correct (0.3787BTC), not 0.0057 which is only my latest transaction. Screenshot:
MultiBit has a "reset blockchain and transactions" option which I've used, after an extended synchronization period it still returns to me only 0.0057BTC. Trying to send any more than that through the client tells me I have insufficient balance.
Is this problem solvable? Could it be a problem with MultiBit, a now unsupported client, and if so, how do I transfer my BTC to another supported wallet?
Advice appreciated, thanks.
Hi dangerjeff,
I too have an old MultiBit wallet and yes a quick visit to
https://multibit.org/ indicates that Multibit is 'No Longer Supported' and includes a 'Dear Bitcoin Community' letter which says: It is time for us to let Multibit go.
What I did my was go to
Tools > Export Private keys
Then click on 'Export to...' From there you may choose where to save the file (file will be named multibit.key)
Then click on 'Export Privates keys'
Important: If you decide to password protect that file (before export) you will later need to use something like OpenSSL in a terminal window to decrypt the private key. It might be a whole lot easier for you to not password protect. However, it's up to you.
Next you'll have to open the file with a text editor (e.g., Notepad).
After that you may sweep (or if you want you may import) the private key into a more modern bitcoin wallet. For example:
Bitcoin.com wallet
Exodus.io wallet
Blockchain.info wallet
You may download a Bitcoin.com wallet at:
https://wallet.bitcoin.com/
Note: Please keep in mind that if you decide to use the Bitcoin.com wallet that you will need to create a QR code of your private key in order to sweep your BTC into the wallet.
Note: Please also keep in mind that if you use a Blockchain.info you'll be using a web wallet (you login to their website).
Note: Please keep in mind that if you download the Exodus.io software wallet that the support team here at Bitcoin.com will not be able to provide you will support.
Having said that I don't see anything wrong with using any of those wallets. It's totally up to you. Moreover, you may use some other bitcoin wallet which hasn't been mentioned in this post.
