It's certainly a starting point for a worthwhile improvement and there where other points form the conference that seemed to get an all around thumbs up so maybe there's the beginnings of approval for a hard fork to implement a variety of improvements and provision for more in the futurePieter Wuille gave a fantastic presentation on “Segregated Witness” in Hong Kong. It’s a great idea, and should be rolled into Bitcoin as soon as safely possible. It is the kind of fundamental idea that will have huge benefits in the future. It also needs a better name (“segregated” has all sorts of negative connotations…).

I think it is wise to design for success. Segregated witness is cool, but it isn’t a short-term solution to the problems we’re already seeing as we run into the one-megabyte block size limit.

All the devs recognize a great idea when they see one, and no hard fork is required.
