I bought some bitcoin in 2014 but have no details of the wallet which I presume I must have created at the time. I have all the transaction info and a 12 word recovery phrase. Can I recover my bitcoin when I dont know where my wallet is held. I have no wallet.dat file on my computer.
Any help appreciated.

Your seed should be enough. Install the bitcoin.com mobile wallet and restore from that seed. If it is from 2014 be aware it has both Bitcoin Legacy and Bitcoin Cash on it. When you restore from seed it may recognize that fact. Keep a hold of that seed even after restoring from it so you can later get other coins like Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin xxx, etc.

Another question. What is the difference between a core wallet and a cash wallet and which should I restore my bitcoin to. I apologise for my ignorance in these matters
