Keeping the forum clean and tidy.

Fri Dec 04, 2015 12:41 pm

I'm an old bitcointalk forum member and I must say that place became a mess. I hope this forum don't become the same.

1-Too many scams. Dozens of new get rich schemes, ponzi schemes...you name it!
2-Most users using banner ads as signatures (for scammy casinos).
3-Many threads saying bitcoin price will reach a million dollars each tomorrow.

1- Nothing against freedom of speech. Some will say it is good to keep the thread as an example of (cemetery) scams. But it makes the forum so polluted. I'm in favor of heavily moderating. Removing threads, specially from new users offering schemes without collateral.
2- Do people really make money polluting the forum? Is it worth it?
3- Again, freedom of speech is great but is it necessary to make dozens and dozens of threads with numbers taken out from somebody's butt? The only explanation I heard worth listening about bitcoin price came from Roger Ver; Amazon duplicating profits if using bitcoin, if bitcoin reached the same market as VISA, etc. That's completely different from "bitcoin will go to 500k usd next week!!! Why? Because I say so".

I'm in favor of heavily moderating the forum to keep it clean and tidy.

Thank you for your valuable input!

We actually want this place to be a SORT OF self-moderating place - the community is the people deciding what goes and doesn't go - and the more users we have, the more in sync with the full communitys need and wishes it will reflect.

The sort of recently implemented reputation system is a good way to indicate what users that are trustworthy. Warnings and members that has been around for a while posting valuable content (according to the other members) can actually remove reputation score from a user and even turn it into a negative score - and I plan on adding a function to point out what posts are made by users with "less than ideal" reputation.

There are two ways to get higher reputation. Be a long time member, (and/or) post content that other members of the forum find worthy of positive feedback.

I am hoping these things will make scam pollution less interesting (simply because it won't be worth it) - and if it comes to that, we will take action to handle a situation that most users do not want. (Probably policy change put up to vote on the forum)

I hope this makes you feel more comfortable about the future of this forum - if not, let me know and I'll happily discuss.

@Evilroot

Reputation is a good concept but it doesn't filter scammers nor spammers. An example:
post10859.html

He is offering 200% profit in 100 hours. Everyone with a brain know this is a scam, most likely a ponzi. Maybe if you're able to make a profit in the beginning but do we want to feed the scammer? Remember pirateat40? It hurts the Bitcoin reputation.
What about polluting the forum? I want to see useful information and discussion. Soon will be thousand of threads like that.

You can't blame someone for making a stupid comment but that user (@elitebitcoin) is clearly trying to scam people (he took the time to register a domain and create a website app). Is that the kind of user this forum want to keep?

I think it's fair to at least delete that thread and give him a warning for not posting scam/ponzi threads again. That is not gambling.

What about something like this:

Create a "spam and scam" category.

Allow all trusted long term reputable users (whatever metric you want to implement) to click on "report this as [spam, scam, other]" and when they do send it to the spam scam folder immediately. This folder would have a very strict warning before entering and phpbb codes would be disabled there.

A mod could still review these reported posts and mark as non spam. If that happens the reputation of the user that clicked on spam is affected. If nothing happens the reputation of this user is increased. You'd lose more reputation for a false flagged post than you would gain for a properly flagged post.

This is a great idea. It puts incentives in place for checks and balances.

Another idea is to put a bounty out for someone to code a scam detection Ai bot. Key indicators would be something like 1000% return a week!
Depending on the sophistication it could learn kinda fast.
If a false positive is reported by an OP and the mod agrees the AI would try to learn from the language used.

AS the above guy posted a very useful post that the scammers are increasing here on bit coin.... The should be filtered as it violate other people on this forum people are leaving this forum just because of these scammers some should do something the concept of reputation is good but you can't stop scammers by this ... we should need a way out to stop scamming and the signatures should be limited........
