What happened to the 24 hour volume on Coinbase Exchange? It's now 156,736BTC

Mon Dec 14, 2015 4:37 pm

Is it due to the Forbes article encouraging bitcoin investment or is this something else?

pretty heavy traffic over there. that could be a start of institutional trading. i DONT think they are faking their volume.

No, it is not due to Forbes.
To add to that, I get a chuckle that the writer of the story revised these updates:

Update Friday December 11, 1:50pm EST: The chart illustrating the theory that a stock bounces up after hitting its 50-week moving average was not of Bitcoin in particular.

Update Friday December 11, 4:30pm EST: A typo incorrectly stated the amount of venture capital in Bitcoin; it’s $314 million, not billion.

If that were a publicly traded company or even regulated, the SEC would be going after them hard.

Good progress of Bitcoin all around with many components working in-tandem.

Traders, Shopping, Investors and Media.

One of my clients of an investment firm was telling me earlier today that they are converting $32M USD into Bitcoin, although not all at once.

All around, good news for the survival of Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies!

Santa arrived in October this year and has stayed here ;)

Probably not the Forbes article. Coinbase gets really good attention from the press all the time. I think it has to do with the new volume based rebates they just started for traders:

Nice. Quite interesting. I also heard last week that some people were looking for very large amounts of bitcoin if anybody wanted to unload them. . . I guess there is some pent up demand.

Now it's 168,639.80 BTC.

It doesn't seem like just a momentary blip.

when you look at the past years you always had alot of attention in bitcoin at the end of every year and in the beginning of every year. and the summertime is boring :)

coinbase is the leader in the US and when people first hear about bitcoin, they will probably go to coinbase.com.

the "satoshi" story might be a reason too (not only a small one)

It does appear to have been quite a big and sustained "blip" (nice technical term, don't you agree?). I took these screenshots yesterday evening from bitcoinity.org.

24 hour trading volume history:
Image

7 day trading volume history:
Image

It looks like a cleanly executed large trade, possibly between parties that agreed to make the trade on coinbase. There was a lot of volume, but not a lot of volatility and that is quite extraordinary. I wonder why no OTC trade was done, but perhaps the purchaser had to use a registered and licensed exchange to make the trade?

They're either faking the volume which I doubt because that might cause tax problems for them (I have no idea what I'm talking about with taxes by the way) or they, like others have suggested, have picked up some large/institutional clients.

Yes it definitely seems so.

I notice even today, although it's a lot less it is still way more than their usual volume and twice as much as bitstamp.

This is an encouraging development.
